Editorial Reviews

Choreographed by Doris Humphrey. Performed by the American Dance Festival Company. NEW DANCE (1935) dramatizes the conflicts between men and women, and also between the individual and the group. WITH MY RED FIRES (1936) deals with the power of love — maternal, romantic, and fraternal — and its capacity for passionate and destructive excesses. It concludes with a vision of human brotherhood that prevails over prejudice, dissension, and violence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doris Humphrey: the granite under the soil, July 23, 2003

This review is from: With My Red Fires / New Dance [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video brings to the screen two great works by one of the alma maters of modern dance. The performances aren't always brilliant, but some dancers and some parts are breathtaking, especially the end part of New Dance, the Variations and Conclusion; the performance of this definitive piece of early modern dance choreography on this tape is absolutely thrilling. "Gutsy, weighty movement", as the great Humphrey alumnus Ruth Currier once put it to me. Definitely advised, if you're an early modern dance enthusiast.
