More About the Author

I'm a writer and editor in Austin, Texas. My novel The Unexpected Miss Bennet came out in 2011 from Robert Hale in the UK and from Penguin Berkley in the US. It takes up where Pride & Prejudice leaves off, specifically regarding Mary Bennet, the most misunderstood of the Bennet sisters. Mary is bookish, a bit priggish, determined to stand out for her accomplishments, and is a typical middle child. So naturally I had to write about her! I've always wondered why she was never selected by the inimitable Mr. Collins to be his bride. The Unexpected Miss Bennet is my answer to that question.

My first novel, Gordath Wood, came out from Ace in the summer of 2008, and the sequel, Red Gold Bridge, in 2009. Gordath Wood is hard to categorize. It's fantasy but with only a touch of magic to it. It has romance, but is not a romance (a very different beast). It has a murder-kidnap mystery in it. Basically it has all of the elements of books I like to read. And although everybody has different tastes, I am betting that more than a few of you also like your books the same way I do -- shaken and stirred. So if you like fantasy-mystery-romance novels, this one's for you.

Like most writers, I have a day job. In my case, I am a business and industry editor. During the day, I write about the mundane and yet still fascinating world of business and commerce, specifically in the financial and construction industries. At night, I switch hats and write fantasy and science fiction.

How I got here:

I always wanted to be a writer but never really did anything about it. It wasn't until I was let go in 1993 from my job as managing editor of a computer magazine that I decided it was time to put up or shut up. As long as I was looking for a job I could write every day for at least an hour and see where it would take me. I figured I'd be out of work for a few months at least. I would write in the morning, job hunt in the afternoon. When the unemployment ran out I'd take my daughter out of day care and be a writing in the morning, jobhunting, stay at home mom (for a while). Bliss!

It lasted for two weeks. Then I got a call from a rival magazine saying, hey, we heard you need a job. So I was back to work right away, wondering what happened to my bliss, but I kept writing. Short stories, novel starts, articles, you name it. I didn't sell for another six years. In the meantime I had another child, moved to my current day job, and kept writing stories and selling them.

I haven't stopped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and thrilling, July 23, 2009

"Red Gold Bridge" is the enormously satisfying conclusion to "Gordath Wood", and it matches the first book in its wonderful writing, inventive plot, true-to-life characters (with especially strong females) and flat-out excitement. The two books tell a story packed with unpredictable action and romance that is at once intelligent and thrilling.

4.0 out of 5 stars RGB Review - Jul 209, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Red Gold Bridge (Paperback)
This book actually gets a 4.67 from me. It was nearly perfect, yes, I said that.

It had the right mix of intrigue, thrills (not the cheap kind), suspense and wonder. The second book also got the POV's right, weaving them all together almost seamlessly and allowing every character to develop yet go further with the plot culminating back to the beginning to Joe. Joe started this book off and he ended the book, much like Lynne started the last book off.

I was afraid I was going to be left with the same feeling I had toward the romance of Aerin and Tor and the magic guy from "The Hero and The Crown" - but I wasn't. It was a good ending told realistically enough with Lynne, Joe and Crae and gave them enough of a good ending to believe anything else that followed.

Crae really grew on me in this book and I kept hoping for him to succeed and to be comfortable in his own skin as well as in his own lot. I didn't see him as an interloper between Joe and Lynne like the last book and I really felt he was coming into his own.

We learned more about Joe in this book. Between his own narration and the stories that his mother told, I got a better idea of just who Joe was and why he was so special.

Lynne took a bit of a backseat in this one and was more or less coming to terms with her own emotions and actions that occurred in the last book. Her choices have an effect on both men.

Kate Mossland is the object of a crazy man's affections and she grows up further in this book. She has an idea of what she wants to do and who she wants to be but it takes her a little while to get there. Her sacrifice is enormous and you can feel her loss, blunted only a little by the presence of Colar, and get a sense that maybe this sequel could lead to a third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid, thoughtful read, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Red Gold Bridge (Paperback)
This is a fantasy populated by realistic people with realistic conflicts. Rather than good v. bad, many of the conflicts in RGB are between well-meaning people who are struggling with hard circumstances or loss. At the same time, though, our world and Aeritan are again at risk.

As others have pointed out, Crae's story is a highlight. All the characters have grown. One of Joe's relatives enters the picture, adding some depth and laughter.

It's not a perfect book, but I'd rate it over 4. Definitely has more substance than your average fantasy. Worth every penny!
