5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent record from the later Fairport, December 27, 2002
This review is from: Red & Gold (Audio CD)
When Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, and Dave Mattacks decided to revive the Fairport Convention name in 1985, many old time fans of the band were aghast, and have never forgiven them for continuing on without Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, and Dave Swarbrick; which is really a shame, since the latter period band has often been the equal, or even sometimes superior to the earliest line ups. This record is a perfect example: not a weak cut on it. The title song is a marvelous look at the senselessness of war and power as seen through the eyes of an innocent bystander. The other songs are alternatingly funny, moving and exciting, and the musicianship is superb. Simon Nicol's voice has matured into such an expressive instrument, he is easily the finest male singer ever involved with this band.

Would you buy a record because a stranger asked you to? You won't be sorry.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant example of the later Fairport, September 18, 2002

This review is from: Red & Gold (Audio CD)
The centerpiece of "Red and Gold" is the title song, a Ralph McTell ballad based on a British Civil War battle that took place in the band's home base of Cropredy. It's an epic song, and truth be told, it's fairly boring. Luckily, the rest of the album offsets it pretty well. Highlights are Dylan cover "Open the Door, Richard" and Maartin Allcock's instrumental "The Noise Club". "Set Me Up" and "The Beggar's Song" also contribute to a lively feel. The CD includes a live version of "Close to the Wind" that was not on the original album.

(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)
