Amazon.com Review

If you could buy only one book about Linux 2.x and its associated software, Red Hat Linux 6 Server would make an excellent choice. This book deals with all aspects of the Red Hat 6 distribution of the operating system that's brought about a sea change in the computer and networking industries.

Mohammed Kabir, a programmer and an expert on the Apache server, has written a book that's patient and easy to follow, yet detailed and packed with information you'll need to get yourself out of jams. Though more information on Gnome and other graphical environments would make this book better, Kabir's coverage of the basics--installation, configuration, basic networking, workaday commands, and the file system--is very good.

This book distinguishes itself from its pack of competitors with its coverage of server software, however. A large part of this book deals with the installation, configuration, and use of various servers, including those for the Domain Name System (DNS), electronic mail, Web documents, SQL databases, and FTP documents.

The author's style seems almost joyous at times. He'll typically explain how to do something in the standard way, then begin to rattle off variations on that theme: "You might want to do this! Or this! Or--oh, watch this--this!" This sort of presentation is a lot of fun to read, and it makes the reader aware of exactly how flexible the Linux environment can be under the control of a knowledgeable handler. Red Hat Linux 6 Server does a real service for the Linux community, particularly for newcomers to the operating system. --David Wall

Topics covered: All aspects of Red Hat Linux 6, with emphasis on setting up fire-and-forget server software that can make a Linux box an important part of an enterprise's computing infrastructure. All essential network services--including Network File System (NFS), Structured Query Language (SQL), and Samba--receive excellent coverage.

More About the Author

Mohammed Junayed Kabir (prefers to be called Kabir) was born in Bangladesh in 1971. He came to Sacramento, CA in 1990 to study computer engineering and has been living in Sacramento since then. His first book CGI Primer was written in 1995 and published in 1996. Kabir continued to write a dozen more books on Linux, Apache, MySQP/PHP, etc. over the last decade. He decided to stop writing technical books for publishers as he found the publishing process to be outdated and feels technical writing is best done in online format where changes, revisions and updates are up to speed with technologies that are written about.

Kabir is working on few new online titles: Virtual CIO for Small Business -- an online book to help small businesses make better technology decisions; The Software Company in a Box; Smart Sourcing Software for Small Companies -- a guide to help small businesses identify software needs, learn how to engage and manage small software projects using common sense tools and methodologies.

Kabir's company, EVOKNOW (short for Evolutionary Knowledge), focuses on building Web apps that help customers find initial user base and the kick-off buzz needed to launch new products and services. Kabir can be reached at kabir@evoknow.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
I recently started working for an ISP, and had never touched Linux or UNIX before. All of my server experience was with Microsoft products. I needed to know how to set up and maintain DNS, Mail, and webservers on the new Linux servers we were setting up. After looking at many other titles, this one caught my eye. It covers everything from everyday Linux commands (since I didn't know any), to the VI editor (another clueless area for me), to X Windows, to security. This book has now earned a permanent place on my desk as my primary Linux reference. The author is technically detailed, yet puts everything in everyday language. It is one of the few "technical" books you can actually READ, instead of skimming through. I cannot recommend it enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo, two thumbs up, November 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
A few months ago it was next to impossible to find a useful book on Linux. It seems that things are changing for the better. I read from this book for 5 hours, before I bought it. The reason for this screening was, that I didn't want to buy another lemmon (and yes, there are too many out there). I am happy to have this book in my shelf and I would like to thank the author for another step I was able to climb because of his work. Thank you. A true 5 star book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with Red Hat Linux 6.1 (Professional), December 31, 1999

This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
I bought the Official Red Hat Linux 6.1 Professional from the Red Hat web site. I have had problems throughout this book in using it with that software. For starters, this book doesn't cover the new GUI installation options. Further, every time I try something new (e.g. Apache installation) I find that files are not where this text says they should be. Some problems are simple to overcome, but some are not.

Having said that, the book isn't bad in its coverage of some of the general things one might want to do with a Linux server. It's readable and has some nice examples.

Perhaps if you use the Linux off the (included) CD, Red Hat 6.0, you won't have these problems (but who wants to install yesterday's Linux?). If you want to use this text with the latest Red Hat, caveat emptor.
