5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I recently started working for an ISP, and had never touched Linux or UNIX before. All of my server experience was with Microsoft products. I needed to know how to set up and maintain DNS, Mail, and webservers on the new Linux servers we were setting up. After looking at many other titles, this one caught my eye. 3.0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with Red Hat Linux 6.1 (Professional)
I bought the Official Red Hat Linux 6.1 Professional from the Red Hat web site. I have had problems throughout this book in using it with that software. For starters, this book doesn't cover the new GUI installation options. Further, every time I try something new (e.g. Apache installation) I find that files are not where this text says they should be. Some...

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
I recently started working for an ISP, and had never touched Linux or UNIX before. All of my server experience was with Microsoft products. I needed to know how to set up and maintain DNS, Mail, and webservers on the new Linux servers we were setting up. After looking at many other titles, this one caught my eye. It covers everything from everyday Linux commands (since I didn't know any), to the VI editor (another clueless area for me), to X Windows, to security. This book has now earned a permanent place on my desk as my primary Linux reference. The author is technically detailed, yet puts everything in everyday language. It is one of the few "technical" books you can actually READ, instead of skimming through. I cannot recommend it enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo, two thumbs up, November 3, 1999

This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
A few months ago it was next to impossible to find a useful book on Linux. It seems that things are changing for the better. I read from this book for 5 hours, before I bought it. The reason for this screening was, that I didn't want to buy another lemmon (and yes, there are too many out there). I am happy to have this book in my shelf and I would like to thank the author for another step I was able to climb because of his work. Thank you. A true 5 star book.

Some problems are simple to overcome, but some are not.

Having said that, the book isn't bad in its coverage of some of the general things one might want to do with a Linux server. It's readable and has some nice examples.

Perhaps if you use the Linux off the (included) CD, Red Hat 6.0, you won't have these problems (but who wants to install yesterday's Linux?). If you want to use this text with the latest Red Hat, caveat emptor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy to follow, February 29, 2000
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
I have yet to read this book cover to cover, while refering to this book for a How to on configuring a DNS server in Linux I was amazed at the 'to the point' this author has described the task. I am now more intruiged about Linux and can't wait to read more and have a better understanding of Linux Red hat. I think this is a must buy for anyone planning to use Linux Red hat as a server and is new to Linux.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best All in One Linux Configuration Book, December 17, 1999
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
I share my hit and miss book purchases with other people in this industry. But this one is definitely a HIT. I have books on individual subjects covered, but as for a lot of us managing and playing with Linux, you just want to get things going quickly. For example setting up Samba or NFS. It is not a daily routine for me and I forget settings and little gotcha's. This book is clear, to the point and a great reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, May 7, 2000
This review is from: Red Hat® Linux® 6 Server (Paperback)
This book is an excellent reference for the Linux/GNU Red Hat Release user. The book covers just about any topic the beginning user requires to configure his or her system. The examples give you almost everything you need but don't quit give all the details required to complete the task. However, having said that, this book supplies the background required to complete the task at hand. Matt Welsh's "Running Linux" is the industry classic. This book runs a close second in my opinion.

This book really explains How To. When the author explains how to do something, it is easy to understand the first time you read it. The author not only explains how to do something he also tells you why you are doing it. I have about 35 technical books on various subjects and different operating systems, and this is the best and easiest to understand of them all.

I really enjoyed the book. It didn't cover sendmail too well, but everything else was explained well and there were a lot of practical examples.
