IT UNLEASHED EVERY FACT ABOUT 'RED HAT LINUX 8',
By reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
With negligible weaknesses and overwhelming strengths, this "Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed" remains a winner any day! It is one of the few 'Red Hat' texts that completely analyzed the Operating System. No information was spared: on both the Professional and the Personal editions of 'Red Hat 8'.Every aspect of the software, (including OpenOffice and Ximian Evolution), were treated. The details and simplicity of this book makes it a desired tool for both beginners and experts alike. Advanced 'Red Hat' users would value the information it offered concerning how the Operating System copes with a multi-system environment. The same applies to all those who administer or maintain Linux-based servers. This is one of the few books that used straightforward terms to unleash every fact about 'Red Hat Linux 8' Operating System. It is pleasurable to read, and covered both the Professional and Personal editions of the software. The flexibility options that the attached CD-ROM provides is wonderful. This is one valuable book which 'Red Hat Linux 8' users should go ahead and invest on. Both beginners and advanced users of the OS would find their respective niches in it.

A bit light,
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
In the "let's try to cover everything" genre, this one is far from Negus' RH Linux Bible. A bit on the light side on some areas. Go the the store, put them side by side, you'll see.

Intermediate, Not for Beginners,
By Samuel-C "Small Sam" (Jaffa Israel) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
Large Volume that contains a lot of info but confusing as it keeps sending you to other chapters As it says on the Back coverIt is Intermediate, not for Beginners. Double CD contains most of software you need but partitioning for dual-boot can be difficult.

No Linux reference collection would be complete without it,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
Linux expert Bill Ball's Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed includes new and additional material based on the latest release of Red Hat Linux. Incorporating a more advanced approach to presenting information about Red Hat Linux, this comprehensive (1040 pages) instructional manual provides Linux users with the best and latest information intermediate to advanced Red Hat including installation, configuration, system administration, server operations, and security. All of the "user friendly" chapters effectively concentrate on Red Hat Linux software packages. There is an updated topic coverage in areas such as: the architecture of the Linux kernel 2.4.18, USB, KDE , GNOME 1.4, broadband access issues, routing, gateways, firewalling (SOHO networking), the new XFree86 4.2 architecture and features, disk tuning, GCC 2.2, Perl 5.6.1, Python 2, new printing services (CUPS), and security. No Linux reference collection would be complete without the inclusion of Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed. User Level: Intermediate - Advanced

Not as good as the Red Hat Linux Bible,
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
After going through this book in depth, I found it to be good for starters, but not for more advanced info. Too often, this book punts on difficult subjects and information is not provided in an intuitive order. I greatly prefered Christopher Negus's Red Hat Linux Bible - it's got more true to life examples of what someone like me would go through in day to day use of Linux, as well as more extensive network security information.

BEWARE, Sams Publishing, no customer support!,
By MEHMET ENDER BATUR (Ankara, Turkey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed (Paperback)
I bought this book because of the good references. When I opened the CDROM envelop, I found that CD #1 was cracked. I sent the cracked CD #1 to the attention of Assoc. Publisher Mark Taber, Sams Publishing, and kindly asked for a CD #1. This was March 17th, 2003 (it is Aug. 2nd, 2003 now). First it was backorder, than complete silence. No replies to e-mails, and phone calls are any use at all.So beware, if you buy a book with a bad CD from Sams Publishing, you are on your own. |
