More About the Author

Mohammed Junayed Kabir (prefers to be called Kabir) was born in Bangladesh in 1971. He came to Sacramento, CA in 1990 to study computer engineering and has been living in Sacramento since then. His first book CGI Primer was written in 1995 and published in 1996. Kabir continued to write a dozen more books on Linux, Apache, MySQP/PHP, etc. over the last decade. He decided to stop writing technical books for publishers as he found the publishing process to be outdated and feels technical writing is best done in online format where changes, revisions and updates are up to speed with technologies that are written about.

Kabir is working on few new online titles: Virtual CIO for Small Business -- an online book to help small businesses make better technology decisions; The Software Company in a Box; Smart Sourcing Software for Small Companies -- a guide to help small businesses identify software needs, learn how to engage and manage small software projects using common sense tools and methodologies.

Kabir's company, EVOKNOW (short for Evolutionary Knowledge), focuses on building Web apps that help customers find initial user base and the kick-off buzz needed to launch new products and services. Kabir can be reached at kabir@evoknow.com

1.0 out of 5 stars Factually Incorrect, Out of Date, February 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux Survival Guide (Paperback)
I am an experienced Red Hat Linux user and was disgusted at how much incorrect and/or misleading information is in this book and the others in this series. The book is years out of date on config tools, printer tools, etc. They explain linuxconf. :| They talk about LILO but not GRUB. :| I know one of the technical editors for this book, who said that she was paid to proof the books, but the publisher decided to pay no attention to her comments. I am saddened that this book has the Red Hat name, and suggest you avoid this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Red Hat for Beginners, December 4, 2002
This review is from: Red Hat Linux Survival Guide (Paperback)
I have used this book more times than any other book that I own about Linux (about 8 books total) and I must say this is the most clear and concise book of all! Not to mention the most space saving and less bulky of them. If you just started with Linux BUY THIS BOOK! Unless you think bigger is better. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable guide, February 15, 2002

This review is from: Red Hat Linux Survival Guide (Paperback)
Takes over were the O'Reilly books leave off. An excellent guide to carry around. I especially recommended it to serious newbies or people who don't deal with linux constantly. All the basics are covered here. And the book is laid out in an intuitive manner! This is a big bonus when you are in a hurry.
The driver info is a bit dated, but who expects the latest info on drivers from a dead tree?
You can survive in a linux environment with this book.
