5.0 out of 5 stars Good start-up guide
This book got me up and going in minutes. It goes into good detail about the Gnome interface, which is probably the most user friendly GUI for the Linux beginner. Plus just having the RH Linux 6.0 cd accompany it is enough to make you get this book. Advanced users may not find this book has enough detailed information.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
The CD-ROM that comes with this computer contains an old version of Red Hat Linux, version 6.0, as opposed to the latest version 6.2. It didn't have the drivers for my newer computer, so I purchased the 6.2 box, and this really is significantly better. Since the book just covers 6.0, I've found the Red Hat documentation to be more useful than it. Even if this book...

5.0 out of 5 stars New to Linux? Buy this now!, November 21, 1999
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I have been into Linux for about 5 months now and this was the third book I bought on the subject, I only wish it would have been the first one. True advise from a "used to be newbie", buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The one book that really got me up and running in Linux, October 12, 1999
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I tried several other books, but only Harold Davis' bookactually gave me all the info I needed to get Linux running. Yes, youcan install Linux right from the CD in the book, by following Harold'sclear and detailed instructions. And don't let the small size of the book or the plentiful illustrations fool you - this book covers a wide range of Linux commands and tools, even setting up a Web server. The best Linux book I've read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up and running fast with Linux!, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
If you want to get up and running fast with Linux, this book is for you. It doesn't have the jokes of a Dummies book - what it does have are detailed step-by-step task-based guides and LOTS of pictures.

The book emphasizes Red Hat Linux 6 and the graphic user interface of the Gnome desktop (it looks alot like Windows (tm)). But there are also chapters covering Linux at the command line, and even shell scripting!

Try it, you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Linux, November 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I wish this was the first book I bought. There are some real Linux lemons out there, but this book isn't one of them. It does an awesome job of taking you through most of the questions you would have as a new Red Hat Linux user.

Though not a reference book, this is the best book I have seen for Red Hat Linux. If you're new to Linux, BUY THIS BOOK FIRST! If you know what you're doing in Linux, this book is still a great resource when refreshing your memory on less used parts of the system/software. As with most of the Visual QuickStart books (also by Peachpit), it stream lines the learning curve! I am a professional Web developer who has been programming since I was a small child.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is great!, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide (Paperback)
I had heard a lot about Linux and wanted to try it for myself. This book answered all my questions. It showed me how to install Red Hat Linux (it even comes with it on CD-ROM!) and how to get started. This is a great book for anyone who wants to run Linux!

It didn't have the drivers for my newer computer, so I purchased the 6.2 box, and this really is significantly better. Since the book just covers 6.0, I've found the Red Hat documentation to be more useful than it. Even if this book were up to date, it is still poorly organized and incomplete. I just purchased the book Special Edition Using Red Hat Linux, and while it is lengthy, it covers 6.2 (with CD-ROM) and seems quite straightforward.
