5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure! December 10, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Never heard of Lee Atwater? No matter. More important is the all-star cast on this wonderful album. Isaac Hayes, B.B. King, Carla Thomas, Sam Moore, Billy Prestonm , The Memphis Horns, Chuck Jackson, Arlette Nightingale--a fabulous collection of great R&B roots musicians. The effort was put together by Lee Atwater, a political activist with a history as a musician. He was a competent guitarist and singer, but the album was put together as a charity event with a simply fabulous cast.
The song selections and arrangements are excellent. Anyone who enjoyed the old Stax records sound, or just enjoyed the music of The Blues Brothers, is virtually guaranteed to love this album. The fact that it's so cheap is just a bonus! Buy it while you still can!

NOTE: AMMY has incorrectly linked a CD and LP because they both have the same name.
The two are completely different items. This posting is for the UK import record album.

Founded in France in 1974, CHARLY Records was relocated to Britain a year later.
They specialized in reissuing old material from SUN, VEE-JAY and other lesser US labels.

RED HOT & BLUE (CRB 1060) is a mono various artists LP issued in Sept. '83.
Contents are from the SUN Records archives.

**Red Hot and Blue - Dewey Phillips
Red Hot - Billy the Kid Emerson
Gee, I Wish - Billy Love
Baby Please Don't Go - Guitar Red
Love Me Baby - Little Junior's Blue Flames
Bop With Me Baby - Rosco Gordon

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Hot Blues- 91' Grammy Award Winner-Great BBQ September 1, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Awesome blues mix. Atwater is onfire on this CD which was a 1991 Grammy Award winner. These tunes can be heard at Atwaters BBQ chain after the name sake- Red Hot & Blue. The name was from the 50's radio program hosted by Dewy Phillips in Memphis. This CD is fantastic and features the late Lee Atwater along with such Blues greats as BB King, Isaic Hayes, and Areatha Franklin

5.0 out of 5 stars "Bad Boy" does Good October 2, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a mobile DJ with a large political client list, this is the CD I go to for the first and last cuts at fundraisers, announcement events, bull roasts and town hall meetings for one reason. Everybody knows and loves the tunes and artists that put this together.

I first read about the collection int he biography of Lee Atwater. He played these tunes as a teenager in garage bands, and at the peak of his professional career in American politics, pulled together the artists everyone loved to hear. Isaac Hayes, Chuck Jackson, B.B. King. Sam Moore, Arletta Nightengale, Billy Preston, Carla Thomas - these are classic names in rhythm and blues.

Isaac Hayes is much ore than "Shaft". Billy Preston played with George Harrison in the "Concert for Bangladesh". The Memphis Horns set the standard for the brass lines from the sixties through the nineties. B.B. King - what more can I say? And the vocals, that make you want to sing along. Why is this stuff so good? It was what we were raised on, that's why.

"Knock on Wood", Hold on, I'm Coming", "Rescue Me" - you can hear the melody and words running through your mind at the mention of the titles. This CD contains those songs plus ten more to make your heart sing.

From the party at your home to the road trip tot he iPod, this is a must have CD for your collection.

This album came to my attention shortly after the recording weas finished, when Fred Vail, in whose studio in Nashville this album was recorded, kindly gave me a cassette of the finished article.

It says a lot about the kind of man Lee Atwater was that so many of the black music community gave their time to help him realise his dream before he succumbed to his illness. And of course Fred, who was unstinting in his generousity at the time.

Sure there were a lot better players and singers out there than Lee, but what you get here is some superb performances by a stellar cast of old school r `n b musicians and singers, aided and abetted by a genuinely heartfelt set of performances from someone who, whilst a keen amateur at best, transcended his ability level on these cuts.

Aside from the fact that he chose to cover some of my absolute all time favorite r `n b songs - many of which had lain neglected on some record company back catalog shelf covered in dust for years - this record deserves to be heard just because of the fabulous combinations of talent that show up among the songs.

Recorded with love and it shows.
