5.0 out of 5 stars Red Hot & Latin, April 11, 2000

This review is from: Red Hot + Latin: Silencio = Muerte (Audio CD)
This CD is worthy of any fan of Rock en Espanol. Released in 97 when the scene was beginning to gain momentun in the US, the tracks withstand the test of time and sound as fresh as ever. The Cd is filled with heavyweights of music and features such non latin artists as Money Mark of Beastie Boys fame, David Byrne former lead man of Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson an Artist extrodanaire, Buju Banton and Marcia Griffiths of Reggae fame, Melissa Ethridge and numerous other international stars including Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades. The groups are eclectic in styles but make no doubt about it the music rocks! If you are not familar with some of the groups don't worry, just enjoy the latin flavor. Highlights are Cafe Tacuba and David byrne sharing the mic on a track, the outrageous militancy of Todos Tus Muertos and Los Autenticos Decadentes. Collaborations abound has King Chango adds his touch to Geggy Tah's catchy Whoever you are?. There are classics in a reggae-rap style by Mellow Man and several other rap artists that will make you want to turn it up even if you don't speak Spanish, but if you do beware of the explicit lyrics. A low light might be the goofy version of What's New Pussycat by Fabulosos Cadillacs and Fishbone. Really that song should have been left buried in the 60's with Tom Jones only to be sung in a lame kareoke bar! On the other hand Sepultura does a good rendition of the classic Bob Marley song War, hardcore to the max. The fact that so many diverse artists lent their talents to create this album is a testament to their commitment to bring about Aid awareness. Add it to your collection, you won't be dissapointed if you're a Rock en espanol fan. This is an excellent CD to be listened to many times throughout the years.

Here's music that gets the heart pumping and makes you feel happy to be alive. Rico has gone into great detail about the songs and the artists -- and every word he says is true. This is one of those CDs that lives in my car and is played, often, at maximum volume with the moonroof wide open. I've heard it a hundred times and I still love it like crazy.
