About the Author

Dianne Draze holds both a BA in education with a major in mathematics and a MA in curriculum and instruction. Beginning her tenure in the field of education in 1968, she has found many ways to enrich the educational experiences of children. She taught upper elementary grades, junior high mathematics, English and history, gifted programs for grades 1 through 8, and education classes at the university level.

Ms. Draze founded Dandy Lion Publications in 1977, creating a publishing house that specialized in curriculum materials that were appropriate for able learners and gifted students, that combined motivating content with challenging activities, and that were easy for teachers to use. In the capacity of owner and editor, she wrote over 50 books and edited an additional 119 books. Her goal, whether writing or editing, was to create materials that would engage students in thinking, creating, making new discoveries, and applying what they learned to new situation. A person with a great curiosity, she has written curriculum guides on many topics and is always interested in whatever topic she is currently researching or editing.

Ms. Draze has retired from full-time involvement in Dandy Lion Publications and currently consults, writes and edits on a part-time basis.

Please note that Book 1 is NOT the first of two books as the title implies. I purchased Book 1 and Book 2 thinking that it would be a complete set. Instead, it is the same material created for two different age groups. Book 1 is for young children, no older than elementary age. Book 2 has all of the information found in Book 1 plus more and adding suffixes. So, if you want a good book that will cover prefixes, root words, and suffixes, you should skip this book and simply purchase Book 2.
I like the games and workbook format of this book, and I think that young children would enjoy using this. It will help them to learn vocabulary words more easily in the future. Also, vocabulary words are included in each lesson in a way that reinforces the concept being taught in the lesson.
If you have advanced elementary aged students, or any older students (including ESL students) I would highly recommend skipping this book and just buying book two. If you have early learners and you need fun ideas for teaching vocabulary, this book is for you.

Prefixes, roots and suffixes-linguistic building blocks that are fairly nonfunctional by themselves, but string them together and you get a wonderful array of words that make up the English language. By gaining a familiarity with these building blocks, it becomes easy to unlock the meanings of thousands of words. The lessons in Red Hot Root Words are perfect to introduce the most frequently-used prefixes, roots and suffixes. This clear, straightforward presentation will not only introduce new vocabulary, but will also develop skills for understanding the meanings of many common English words.

This book is very useful in teaching both prefixes, suffixes and root words, while also teaching new vocabulary. It is also fun, and not all busy work, so children will not get bored of it. It is definitely worth buying!

"Red Hot Root Words" introduces students to 57 different Greek & Latin roots in 41 lessons plus reviews after every 2 lessons. Each lesson introduces the prefix(es) or root(s), then 5 vocabulary words using the prefix/root. The vocab words are defined and used in a sentence. Then there is a short (typically 4-6 question) practice section using the vocab words. In the root words portion of the book, the practice section usually involves learning a suffix. An answer key is included in the back of the book.

This workbook is solid but a bit on the dull side. The pictures are black & white clip art type. The exercises are often matching, true/false, or circling the correct answer. I feel it's a decent value for the price and a worthwhile part of our homeschool.

Edited to add: I have since purchased Red Hot Root Words: Mastering Vocabulary With Prefixes, Suffixes And Root Words (Book 2) and was very disappointed to discover that nearly every single word from book 1 is repeated in book 2. The main difference between the two books is that each exercise in book 1 tends to cover 1 or 2 roots, while the exercises in book 2 tend to cover 3-5.

Prior to buying book one, prospective buyers should note the review of "A. Chai" who indicates that this is not a set in which Book 2 is an advance of material not found in Book 1. Book 1 is the basic material for grades 3 to 5, and reviewer "A Chai" informs us that we can simply buy Book 2, and get all the same material found in Book 1, plus some additional material for advanced students beyond Grade 5.

Anyway, I have been working with Book 1, and here are my thoughts, while teaching both a 3rd Grade Girl, and a 1st Grade boy at the same time in Homeschooling.

(A) First, the book starts out on the first page with four lessons on the following roots / prefixes / suffixes.

Lesson #1 Sub = Below or Under
Lesson #2 Trans = Across, Over
Lesson #3 Super, Supre, Sur = Above, Over, More
Lesson #4 Pre = Before, Toward

For each of these Latin terms, the book gives about 20 samples of words using the Latin Prefix, Root, or Suffix.
(Prefixes are at the beginning of words, Suffixes at the end of words, just so you know.

I have my students write out the definition as shown, like SUB = BELOW, UNDER; because that is so much faster than teaching children to write out those long, wordy, complciated dictionary definitions.

I do not have my 3rd and 1st Grade homeschoolers write out all of these words.
It is too long a list for one thing, and the words are basically, sort of the "big word" category, like "subterranean".
Instead, I have the children write out two sentences as an example, such as follows:

"I will subdue my enemies." and ... "I will use my subconscious mind.

This product came promptly and in great condition. It was an updated approach to mastering vocabulary for upper elementary grades including prefixes, suffixes and root words. It is broken down into management assignments for the busy classroom teacher, coming with definiton and practice work on the same page.
