4.0 out of 5 stars Great for children, but NOT for use above elementary level, March 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
Please note that Book 1 is NOT the first of two books as the title implies. I purchased Book 1 and Book 2 thinking that it would be a complete set. Instead, it is the same material created for two different age groups. Book 1 is for young children, no older than elementary age. Book 2 has all of the information found in Book 1 plus more and adding suffixes. So, if you want a good book that will cover prefixes, root words, and suffixes, you should skip this book and simply purchase Book 2.
I like the games and workbook format of this book, and I think that young children would enjoy using this. It will help them to learn vocabulary words more easily in the future. Also, vocabulary words are included in each lesson in a way that reinforces the concept being taught in the lesson.
If you have advanced elementary aged students, or any older students (including ESL students) I would highly recommend skipping this book and just buying book two. If you have early learners and you need fun ideas for teaching vocabulary, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars RED HOT ROOT WORDS, October 20, 2005
This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
Prefixes, roots and suffixes-linguistic building blocks that are fairly nonfunctional by themselves, but string them together and you get a wonderful array of words that make up the English language. By gaining a familiarity with these building blocks, it becomes easy to unlock the meanings of thousands of words. The lessons in Red Hot Root Words are perfect to introduce the most frequently-used prefixes, roots and suffixes. This clear, straightforward presentation will not only introduce new vocabulary, but will also develop skills for understanding the meanings of many common English words.

This book is very useful in teaching both prefixes, suffixes and root words, while also teaching new vocabulary. It is also fun, and not all busy work, so children will not get bored of it. It is definitely worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Product review, March 10, 2007

This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
This product came promptly and in great condition. It was an updated approach to mastering vocabulary for upper elementary grades including prefixes, suffixes and root words. It is broken down into management assignments for the busy classroom teacher, coming with definiton and practice work on the same page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Fancy But Gets the Job Done, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
"Red Hot Root Words" introduces students to 57 different Greek & Latin roots in 41 lessons plus reviews after every 2 lessons. Each lesson introduces the prefix(es) or root(s), then 5 vocabulary words using the prefix/root. The vocab words are defined and used in a sentence. Then there is a short (typically 4-6 question) practice section using the vocab words. In the root words portion of the book, the practice section usually involves learning a suffix. An answer key is included in the back of the book.

This workbook is solid but a bit on the dull side. The pictures are black & white clip art type. The exercises are often matching, true/false, or circling the correct answer. I feel it's a decent value for the price and a worthwhile part of our homeschool.

Edited to add: I have since purchased Red Hot Root Words: Mastering Vocabulary With Prefixes, Suffixes And Root Words (Book 2) and was very disappointed to discover that nearly every single word from book 1 is repeated in book 2. The main difference between the two books is that each exercise in book 1 tends to cover 1 or 2 roots, while the exercises in book 2 tend to cover 3-5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for ESL students!, December 2, 2009

This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
I love this book! It is exactly what I needed. I teach ESL students who need a lot of instruction in root words, suffixes, and prefixes to help them unlock the meanings of new vocabulary words. By learning these root words and affixes, my students will learn hundreds of new words with greater ease!

This book is very user friendly and has a nice layout. I especially love that it has review pages and extra ideas for how to practice the roots they've learned with games. It's truly a red hot book!!!!!

This is a great tool for teaching and retaining vocabulary words. We had been using vocabulary "lists" from studies prior to this and the definitions seemed hard to retain. The root word method helps tremendously,

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Hot Sizzles students through to understanding, March 7, 2011

This review is from: Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words) (Paperback)
I have used this workbook for the last 3 years with my 5th grade intervention group of second language learners. I have found that as a result those students in my groups are able to master the Cal. Standard R1.4 and R1.2 and even increase their scores on R1.3. We have used other products as well and have not had the same results. This is truly a valuable resource.
