About the Author

Dianne Draze holds both a bachelor's degree in education with a major in mathematics and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. Beginning her tenure in the field of education in 1968, she has found many ways to enrich the educational experiences of children. She taught upper elementary grades, junior high mathematics, English and history, gifted programs for grades 1–8, and education classes at the university level.

Draze founded Dandy Lion Publications in 1977, creating a publishing house that specialized in curriculum materials that were appropriate for able learners and gifted students, that combined motivating content with challenging activities, and that were easy for teachers to use. In the capacity of owner and editor, she wrote more than 50 books and edited an additional 119 books. Her goal, whether writing or editing, was to create materials that would engage students in thinking, creating, making new discoveries, and applying what they learned to new situations. A person with a great curiosity, she has written curriculum guides on many topics and is always interested in whatever topic she is currently researching or editing.

Draze has retired from full-time involvement in Dandy Lion Publications and currently consults, writes, and edits on a part-time basis.

As I have found the first book in this series (Red Hot Root Words, Book 1 (Red Hot Root Words)) a valuable part of our family's homeschool, I was looking forward to book 2. I was disappointed to find that nearly every root covered in the first book is repeated here. The main difference between the two books is that while book 1 covered only 1-2 roots per lesson, book 2 tends to cover 3-4 at a time.

Great resource to increase your child's vocabulary. Nicely organized workbook, challenging; the prefect way to supplement my kids school work. My fifth grader enjoys spelling much more -- by using his knowledge of root words as clues to the meaning of words!

This is a collection of challenging spelling/vocabulary units based upon Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and affixes. While it says it is designed for 6th through 9th grade, I am currently using it with my fifth grade class. I have found that I have to supplement the book with other tasks that assign as part of a weekly packet, because this book only provides one practice page per unit (hence the four stars instead of five).
Through use of this resource book, I have already observed growth in my students' vocabularies, especially due to the fact that many of the words from these units appear in our content area studies. I encourage my students to draw these connections by passing out tickets related to our positive reinforcement classroom program whenever one of our past words is identified in a text, lesson or discussion. They have to identify the word and define it to earn their ticket.
If you are looking for a strong support text for your spelling and/or vocabulary element of your literacy curriculum, this is a great way to go!

Review from 10 year old user:

"I like using this book. It gives you a little bit of a head start in figuring out what unfamiliar words mean."
