5.0 out of 5 stars RuPaul:Alive & Kicking
Having a novelty hit with "Supermodel" in the early nineties was not of any service to RuPaul's career. Surely, it made her a household name putting her on the pop game, but she was forever to be categorized as the one with that song, even when followed by a couple of eligible dance floors fillers, like the wonderful "Snapshot" and the earlier dance-inciting "Shady...

3.0 out of 5 stars Third time's the charm
RuPaul's third CD is better than her second, but not as great as her debut. This album's 14 songs have much more of a Hip Hop and R&B vibe than the other CDs' more Disco, House, and Pop flavor; but don't worry, club kids, there are plenty of House beats. It is also more of an album by RuPaul André Charles, the man, than RuPaul, the mythical drag queen matriarch...

5.0 out of 5 stars RuPaul:Alive & Kicking, October 28, 2004
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
Having a novelty hit with "Supermodel" in the early nineties was not of any service to RuPaul's career. Surely, it made her a household name putting her on the pop game, but she was forever to be categorized as the one with that song, even when followed by a couple of eligible dance floors fillers, like the wonderful "Snapshot" and the earlier dance-inciting "Shady Shade." The Christmas album Ho Ho Ho was also a great delight that went forgotten and her prolific blog was always a source of news to her followers. A string of minor movie roles followed, but nothing even came close to a supporting role.
As a drag artist, RuPaul received iconoclastic status early in her career adding a stigma of judgment to her. The world hasn't seen a figure so outrageously proud of gender-bending since Divine and Ziggy Stardust.
This time RuPaul brings back the diva with a vengeance. Her latest, Red Hot, is more hits than fluff.
The lead single "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous" is the standard attitude-driven gay club anthem set to rear its head at every circuit party from now on. "Coming Out Of Hiding" is exactly what its name suggests: the national closet- exit anthem.
What is surprising about this album is that it incorporates other genres, specifically more R&B. "Are You Man Enough?" has a mid-90's revival tone while "Kinky /Freaky," without reading the liner notes, sounds like the brainchild of none other than The Neptunes, the striking resemblance echoes Kelis' pre-"Milkshake" efforts. Moreover, "Just A Little In & Out" is another leaning groove number.
Red Hot is an upbeat album in every meaning possible, it doesn't drag-along and relies on catchy dance numbers such us the tonic "Workout" and the single-worthy "People Are People" - a standout track.
Red Hot also displays another aspect of RuPaul's vocal ability on "I Need More." Plus, the computer manipulations on "Hollywood U.S.A." and the "My Love Sees No Color" come close to Cher territory.
In a market that is so enamored by Jessica Simpson that it can't help but make her sister Ashlee popular, too, it is unlikely that such a sharp and robust album like RuPaul's Red Hot would receive the recognition it deserves. Nonetheless, this release has more hits than the current top ten albums combined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rupaul is back and better than ever!, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
Rupaul is back in all her sassy glory. I have been a Rupaul fan dating back to "Supermodel Of The World." Her music is fun, smart, and funky. I love the humor always infused in her songs. This new album is fantastic. I was delighted to hear the first single "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous." It is Ru in all her brassy, vain fabulousness! The lyrics are hilarious! And of course, set to a killer beat and hook. Anyone who can get away with writing songs about their own beauty (and not turn people off) should be given an award. I love her humor about herself and life in general. And yes, she is drop dead gorgeous! I was rendered speechless by the photos in the cd jacket. She is well......breathtaking. My favorite tracks on this great cd are
-Hollywood
-Give It One More Try
-My Love Sees No Color
This album is really great music. Although my friends always giggle when I listen to her, she is an extremely talented artist. I love her positive messages and heart that her music emits. Go on Ru! Heres to more great albums! (and please don't make us wait 8 more excruciating years! A Huge Fan, Eric Turner

5.0 out of 5 stars RuPaul is in her element...dead center in her element!!, November 18, 2004

It was so nice to hear from this diva again - it's been far too long since had some quality camp-dance-disco-with-attitude! The intro skits are totally gut-busting! I laughed and laughed during these. She actually mocks and amplifies African American dilect, which is sure to please any listener. The album then kicks off with the movie hit "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous". I didn't realize this was from a movie until I heard it. Wasn't it Connie & Carla? Then "Coming Out of Hiding", with it's attitude - what a great song. The rest of album pleases as well, with the exception of one song! What did Ru have to remake "People are People"? I didn't like it, but wasn't awful enough to dock it a star.

Bottom line: If you're a dance music fan, crazy about Ru, need a little fun in your life or want some quality drag queen tunes spinning on your CD player, this CD is for YOU!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco Diva Ru is Red H-O-T, November 13, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
OMG this CD is Ru's best!! Why is it so great? Ru has done it again. She mixes dance, R&B, rap and just a little bit of disco into a great pop CD that everyone should rock to!

Some of the best tracks on this CD?

My Love Sees No Colors
Listen to this song and you'll be taken into a 70's NYC disco. It's such a beautiful song with such a positive message.

People Are People
This is also a great message, the lyrics are very powerful. Ru provides the backup beat to Paul Trujillo who takes center stage on this song.

Kinky Freaky & Just A Little In And Out
These are 2 different songs but they have a similar message and similar beat. The songs are freaky, funky, and very danceable.

Hollywood USA
This is such an upbeat, danceable track that Ru puts Madonna's 2003 hit "Hollywood" to shame.

The entire album is really awesome. All the songs have a very upbeat, positive message that will be fun to listen to with friends or at a party

This is Ru's first full-length CD in a few years but I haven't seen any promotion for it. Why not? I recently read a small blurb in the NY Daily News stating that most of mainstream media is still afraid to showcase a black homosexual crossdresser. That is unfortunate. If society can get past their own homophobia and racism they will find an excellent CD that is very entertaining and one of the best pop CDs of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Smokin' HOT, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
AS A DJ, and A Fan from the early San Diego years, Ru. "GIRL...U have it Workin'" Once again. Nothing fails on this CD or surprises me about RuPaul. It is simple, yet gets you groovin' as well as sends out a message if you listen carefully (My Love Sees NO COLOR)and the debut remix via "Gomi" is Fierce (Lookin' Good, Feelin' Gorgeous)clocking in at over 9 min if pure feel good music, I am so pleased with the vocals, as well as the maturity RuPaul has placed into this CD. The Girl Has become a "woman" and what ever you want to believe in so be it. The world would be a better place if everyone accepts people for who they are BORN to be. An Actress a Singer a talk show host a Fashion DIVA and a SUPERMODEL of the WORLD!!! U GO GIRL!

i'm totally impressed with this album. there are only a couple songs i'm not 100% jazzed over, but as a whole, this album is RuPaul's best and most daring. the lyrics are deeper than anything you will find on "supermodel" or "foxy lady". this is a totally different RuPaul, it really cannot even be compared to his previous work. shirley q. liquor is awesome on this as well ("Orange Wig Skit" will have you wetting your pants!) and is another way Ru is pushing the envelope with this album. stand-out tracks IMO are: "My Love Sees No Color", "People are People" (I hope this is the next single!), "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous", "Coming Out of Hiding" and "The Price of One". if you like surprises, get this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gurl, You Peed!, February 27, 2005
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
A new CD twelve years after the debut of SuperModel of the World proves that you just can't kill a good drag queen, especially one who can actually sing. And, gurl, this CD has some "uh-uh, no she didn't" moments as some of the lyrics stop being polite and just get real in a few of the songs. I love the added comedy bits, including the part suggesting that RuPaul might mace the next person who tells her she better work. If ever I have the chance, I'll say it just to get maced by RuPaul (there's a slogan for a t-shirt). Defintely fun and laden with danceable tracks like Kinky/Freaky and Love Is Love, this CD continues the legacy of our favorite glamazon. I would have liked it better had the cover songs Coming Out of Hiding and People Are People more closely paralleled the originals (hence the four stars instead of five), but just to know that a queen can still release a CD in this narrow-minded world we live in, I'll take them just as given. The lyrics to Hollywood U.S.A. suggest some regret on RuPaul's part for love sacrificed for the sake of fame (yes, I actually listen to the lyrics--go figure!). Here's hoping that's just creative songwriting and not some real regret because my gurl should not feel pain. That said, thanks, Ru! You peed, gurl, and the covershot is fierce just like you!

This current album by RuPaul is more of the same dance-pop music that one has come to expect from the "Supermodel of the World". The major highlight of this CD is the addition of Shirley Q. Liquor, who is absolutely hilarious! Shirley Q. and Watusi Jenkins make for fun interludes between Ru's red-hot dance numbers, and the album is better for it! This CD deserves to be played on a sunny day while driving with the top down. A must for any dance music fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you want to Come out of Hiding, September 23, 2004
This review is from: Red Hot (Audio CD)
Goodness! RuPaul's new album is off the hook! This is Lil Kim, Cher, and Kristine W all thrown into a blender and turned to some fabulous setting.

I'm raving here. I'm so excited! This is RuPaul to the year 2004. Updated and in our faces. I could so spin around on stage to these songs. I could spin around anywhere to these songs. They bring out the drag queen in me and I'm not a drag queen!

All the songs are hot and the beat is fierce. The interludes by Shirley Q. Liquor & Watusi Jenkins are falling down hilarious. It's just all so great. As Ru says, this is SICK.

Go buy it!
