1.0 out of 5 stars Just another Get Up Kids release, kids...
Basically what this CD comes down to is Anne Arbour, as the other songs are on the full-length CD that follows.

Anne Arbour's winding melodies and heartfelt vocals lend creedence to the view that the Get Up Kids could be very good, assuming that the vast majority of their lyrics and songs improved to the point at which they weren't ripping off Braid consistently...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Emo-Punk, September 10, 2000

Yes, I know Get Up Kids aren't punk, but this EP is in the true spirit of that kind of rock. It is short, to the point, and features simple, fast(er) songs that make sense. Despite the fact that I am not a fan of this type of music, the Get Up Kids are excellent here, as always.

They are all great musicians, blending a ton of melodics with emo-y vocals and a talented rythmn section. The guitars are stunning, as well as the bass which can be heard well (surprisingly) through the sonic fence the guitars set up. The vocals are great, heartfelt, happy, and yet a little sad as well. The lyrics are good too, although a little kiddish at times "You're the one for, you're the one for me", but you get the point they are trying to get across.

The structure of each song is fairly good, but they do get a little repetative at times, especially the title track, which is my favorite but can get old quickly. "Anne Arbour" is a great song too, along with "Red Letter Day" and "One Year Later". The whole thing is listenable, but very simple. It is definitely worth checking out if you are new to the band, though. Once you buy it, you have to listen a little bit more to really get into the music.

Overall, it is definitely worth the money. It is a short, cheap EP of punkier emocore songs which serve as a superb intoduction to that kind of music in general. It is hard to say if you'll like it or not, but I really think you may, being that Get Up Kids cross more than two styles with each other and write great lyrics too. They could easily be on the radio, but aren't due to that aforementioned punk spirit. It's a good thing to pick up. Optimistic music. Also check out Face To Face, Jimmy Eat World, Braid, Alkaline Trio, and Promise Ring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, May 5, 2000

You should buy this, ALL the songs are awesome. There is one drawback though: 11 bucks for five songs. Its up to you to decide whether or not it is worth it, but I JUST told you this cd is awesome, why aren't you buying it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Can I Just Say..., August 4, 2000

Hey, just thought I'd let everyone know that "Anne Arbour," on this CD, is one of THE GREATEST SONGS ever. I've played it hundreds of times and it never loses its impact. They really cheated people by not putting it on the 2nd LP. Its just one of those songs where lightning strikes, you know? Whenever I put it on, for 3 minutes the world makes sense. That sounds totally lame, I know, but once you hear the song, I'm sure you'll agree. Somehow someway, get your hands on a copy of "Ann Arbour." And the other Get Up Kids stuff is great too...

Anne Arbour's winding melodies and heartfelt vocals lend creedence to the view that the Get Up Kids could be very good, assuming that the vast majority of their lyrics and songs improved to the point at which they weren't ripping off Braid consistently anymore.

And even then, the original version of Anne Arbour (7" released by Subpop) is a million, bizillion times better than this one.

Just thought I'd warn you guys ahead of time...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Epitomy of Good Music, February 5, 2001

The Get Up Kids Red Letter Day [EP] delivers some of the band's best songs. Forgive and Forget is replete with awsome guitars and drums while Anne Arbour is strung out with thoughtful lyrics. Mass Pike combines bells and drums to provide a funky intro then goes into a sonic assault of power chords, drums, bells, and even strings. Anne Arbour is probably my favorite song on the EP. The songs are simple, yet pack a quasi-punk/emo punch that is definitivly Get Up Kids style. The lyrcis are simple at times, but they are still good, and contain verses that everyone can realate to. It took a few listenings to get into this one, but then it became a seasoned veteran in my CD player. If you are looking for something new, and haven't checked out The Get Kids yet, this CD can definetly start you out on the right track. If you like the Get Up Kids, you should aslo check out Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio for some awesome music too.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like the GET UP KIDS..., October 11, 2000
This review is from: Red Letter Day (Audio CD)
If you're a fan of the GET UP KIDS be sure to check out Matthew Pryor's [lead singer] side-project titled THE NEW AMSTERDAMS which falls into a realm of delicately arranged acoustic ramblings backed with incredibly solid indie-pop songwriting. He also does amazing renditions of the Boilermaker's "Slow Down" and the Afghan Whigs "When We Two Parted".

5.0 out of 5 stars Another solid recording by the Get Up Kids, April 2, 2000

Released in between Four Minute Mile and Something to Write Home About, this recording isn't great, but it's standard Get Up Kids, who are of course awesome, and therefore, while not being great, still gets 5 stars for being flawless. The version of Red Letter Day on this is better than the one on the album, and the rest of the songs are good as well.
