4.0 out of 5 stars An accomplished departure.
In this album Indigo Swing grows from their previous outings with a fresh, more energetic approach to their sound, which I think appeal to anyone looking for an alternative to the standards of the swing dance floor. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite worth the effort
As a big fan of Indigo Swing, I had been eagerly waiting for this release. Ilistened to it for two weeks before I could review it...I thought I might be missing something. I have finally come to realize that it's not me, that something just isn't there. This release attempts a departure from everything that set them apart as a premiere swing band.

Hey guys, the word...

In this album Indigo Swing grows from their previous outings with a fresh, more energetic approach to their sound, which I think appeal to anyone looking for an alternative to the standards of the swing dance floor. The faster songs ("Pop's At The Hop," "Hot Pot Boogie," the understated speed of "I Know My Love Is True") scream with energy and beg for a quick double-step on the floor. The gem of this album is "Ruby Mae": slow as anything, but smoother than your partner's spinning skirt. It begs for a soulful dance, and should not be listened to when alone.

There is a down side to this album. I find that it just doesn't quite flow the way All Aboard! does. There are a few tracks I could do without ("Big Hair Mama," "Stayin' Up...", and "So Far..."), but aside from them, the songs stand well on their own, each with a 'spark' of energy. As always, the musicians' mastery of their respective instruments is apparent.

Don't buy this album expecting All Aboard! Disc 2. There is a degree of emotion - hints of broken hearts - missing from Red Light! that was present in All Aboard!, but I had my time getting over someone while while wallowing in All Aboard!, and I'm ready for something upbeat. This is simply *good* music.

Hey guys, the word "swing" is in your name! Care to cut an actual swing track?

This is not to say I didn't like it at all, but it won't call you onto the dance floor like "All Aboard" did. I am also sick of the tired old excuse of "yeah, but you should see them live". Well, I have seen em, but I'm buying a CD, so whats the point?

Bottom line is that if you're looking for the same energy & style that came out in their prior releases, you will be disappointed. Its almost an entirely different sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Since Ice Cream!, July 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Light (Audio CD)
Dare I make such a statement? I love ice cream and I loved Indigo Swing's All Aboard. Little did I know that it got better. Red Light! completely amazed me. I can't say enough good things about it and I couldn't come up with a bad thing if I tried. You simply cannot listen to this cd and not be moved by the mix of swing, rock, and Latin beats. It's smooth and refined and appears to be mood-altering as well. Red Light! it well worth your money; it's fun and listening to it feels great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Idigo Swing delivers., July 12, 1999

Don't you hate it when you discover a band you love and then all their music starts to sound the same. NOT with Indigo Swing. This band starts great and just keeps getting better. It's thrilling to hear their new music, they always keep it fresh. Buy this CD. Another love letter from Phoenix.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine, but a bit disappointing, June 29, 1999

After two teriffic albums, I guess we can forgive Indigo Swing if they slow down a bit and put out a lesser effort. They're experimenting a little here, and most of these new directions simply do not work. They're a swing band in the jump blues style, it's what they do best, and that's what I want to hear. Some of the tracks here are awesome, especially "Another Day in L.A." and the soulful "Ruby Mae." As an experiment with Western Swing, "They Say I Must be Crazy" is also fairly solid, and the title track will get people moving. But the light jazz pop of "So Far Away From Me" and the Latin jazz-carribbean beat that sneaks into pieces like "You Don't Worry So Much" and "Love is Gonna Find You" take the album down quite a few notches. Or maybe it's just that INDIGO SWING and ALL ABOARD!, their first two albums, were so good that almost anything else seems like a disappointment? If you like swing, buy it anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indigo Swing Keeps Evolving., June 4, 1999
By A Customer

Don't expect "All Aboard" when you're listening to this CD. There's still the boogie-woogie piano and Johnny Boyd's distinctive voice, but there's a lot going on in this CD. Standard blues walking lines and latin beats. Baron's contributions to the songwriting. Warren's a-singing and Baron's on flute (!) on "Stayin Out Late With Sonny". Listening to "Love's Gonna Find You", I'm thinking of lounging with a Rock Hudson and Doris Day movie. "Another Day in LA" will probably be the big hit off this CD, but give the rest of it a listen. It's very interesting and let's IS fans know they're not doing the same old thing, but growing musically. This band's got staying power like the Cigar Store Indians and Jet Set Six by writing originals that push their music forward and challenge other bands to keep up.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you ever get any neo-swing CD, you must have this, July 11, 1999

I don't know what all those people are saying about this album not being as good as the other. The way they've added different sounds like some Latin/Carribean gives this album its uniqueness. I like the songs "Loves Gonna Find You", "Best You Can", Big Hair Mama", "REd Light" the soulful "Ruby Mae" and especially "Guillaume's Pepper Step" This album leaves Big Bad Voodoo, and Cherry Popin daddies in the dust!

I think that Red Light! is an awesome album from the band. While it doesn't sound like All Aboard there is still the boogie woogie flavor in the songs. The boys use a variety of intruments as well as expanding their musical style by putting a waltz on the cd. This is a must have and from the first listen it will make you want to dance! I have to hear it multiple times a day.
