5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is probably one of the best books for a newbie (like me) to Linux. The author explains in a simple non-cryptic fashion and the book covers everything that you ought to know about Linux to start you off.
Thanks to the book, I now have a full-fledged personal server running in my office off an old PII machine.
Overall, an excellent book. I highly reccommend...

Unfortunately I bought the Red Hat Linux 7.2 BIBLE along with the Red Hat Linux "The Complete Reference". This book has been moderately useful in my day to day support of Linux. It leaves you with more questions than answers. If you purchase this book also buy "The Complete Referrence", it is a must. Where this book fails you TCR can answer those...

I bought [a] computer (new)...(733 Mhz Cyrix chip w/ 20 gig HD and 128 Mb RAM) and this Red Hat Linux Bible ready to explore Linux for the first time. As I installed the OS, I'm thinking, "This will never work." But, to my astonishment, I got my linux box on my LAN and started surfing the Internet at cable-modem speeds in less than an hour!

This amazing book contains three CDs and documents lots of free software. I'm particularly excited about the Apache web server and the MySQL server. It looks like the Perl, C, C++, and Python programming languages are here, too. I'll have to look for the Java compiler, the Tomcat JSP server, and the PHP server.

As for home use with Star Office? We'll just have to see. This is so cool!

I started with Red Hat Linux about 2 years ago, but didn't have time to learn much at all. I bought this book the other day, and I already have it working on my windows network. Its actually doing most of the jobs my other servers were doing. I just saved myself a ton of money on software license fees. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to linux as well to the experienced linux pro. 10 Stars********** I also highly recommend SAMBA Essentials for Windows Administrators. ISBN: 0-13-040942-1

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a gem of a bible, January 31, 2002

Linux has come of age. Red Hat 7.2 is the version that brings it to the masses. In 2000, I was strugling on loading Linux to my Notebook - most of the drivers were not recognized. There many agonizing days before it started to work - without modem support. And linux literature was disparate and difficult to come by.

Red Hat Version 7.2 makes things almost as easy as a Microsoft OS to newbies. And the book goes through the steps in extremely digestable formats. Red Hat support does not come along with the CDs - but this is not really necessary. The book covers the topics very well. And if you need to troubleshoot on areas not covered by the book, there are a wealth of info through google and deja.

Best wishes on your migration to Linux. It is a fun OS to use and the migration path is now, almost, painless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!, January 25, 2002
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible Unlimited Edition (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
I have been in IT (Novell, Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix) for many years and have been playing with Linux on a project by project basis. This book cleared up alot of the things that I didnt understand and made Linux a usable workstation platform for me. I am currently getting into some really high end firewalling solutions and webservers for a client and I will be using Linux and this book!!

...

I'm no newbie to Linux, but neither pro, but after reading for 2 days (more than 100+ pages already), I can't resist to let everyone to know that this is one of the best reference books that I've ever read!

Very detailed, and I meant it! All the way through the installation, the author provided every single details and commands and procedure, and even information that a non-computer-literated person can walk through the install, and learning the technology that is beneficial to general computing.

The servers sections and troubleshooting sections are also very informative and handy if you runs into any problems, while also emphasized on very technical info that any geeks would love to be reminded!

The 3 CDs has RH7.2 on it, as well as tons of HTML-based documentation that's very easy to explore.

I always love to read QUE-published books but I found this one is so unique that Chris (the author) has done such a great job in detailing everything with heart.

I think I'll become a Linux pro very soon!

This book covers anything you could possibly want to know about Linux, and then some. I originally got this book to learn how to setup a network with Linux but found myself learning about newsgroups, doing backups, mounting file systems, writing shell scripts and so much more. What makes this book really great is that it can be read from front to back or used as reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Out There For Red Hat 7.2, April 18, 2002
By
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible Unlimited Edition (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
The book covers everything I could possibly want to know. I had never used linux before this book. The college I attend dosen't teach any classes that deal with linux. But any person in the computer field can tell that linux is becoming a contendor and knowlege of this Operating System is a must. When you open the book it looks a little dry not much for pictures or anything like that it is strictly read it do it. I am using linux as a second operating system on my computer but if you want to take advantage of the operating systems server capablities and experiment with them you need a computer ready to run linux and linux alone. Also how many books out there about operating systems give you the operating system free well this one does.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible Unlimited Edition (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
Being an Systems Engineer, this book gets you started, but there's more to ask for. Don't get me wrong, if you're not familiar with Linux/Unix this is a great book. It's explained in plain English with easy to follow instructions.
For us who wants more hard core, we can always use google.com.
