A Life Changer,
By "scomom55" (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
I had been somewhat familiar with 24-7 Prayer for several months from reading articles by Pete Greig in Relevant Magazine, and when I read that Red Moon Rising was coming out in November, I pre-ordered it. After about the 4th chapter I went online and ordered a case of them to give away. The reactions of other friends I've given it to have been the same. I've read this book 2 times (the only reason I haven't read it more is because I keep loaning it to people) and each time I get more and more stirred up...by what God is doing around the world and in the church as He stirs the heart of this generation to pray. The comments I most hear from people who've read it have to do with the sense of freedom that people feel in this thing as well as a sense of unity & interconnectedness within the church. It's not about just one church gathering it's people together to pray for their particular needs (although that has value, too), it's more about the church, globally, connecting...regardless of denomination, doctrine, etc. and supporting one another as they reach out to their communities. It also speaks to the cry of this generation to touch a hurting and lost world...not standing on the street corner passing out tracts, but in real ways...feeding the hungry, helping the poor, sitting with & praying for the drug addict that's just overdosed, etc. If you have a heart to see God move in this generation, read this book and you'll be convinced He can do it through you.

This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
This is not just a book about cool things Christians are up to. It's a reminder of what happens if we let ourselves hear God's heartbeat and allow ourselves to be consumed by His agenda.
Reading this book made me feel more connected to my dreams than ever before as I read about things I've seen in my heart for years, but wondered if I would ever see with my eyes. It reminded me to continue to dream, and to be confident that as I persue God's heart I will hold those dreams in my hands as reality. It reminded me that I'm not alone, that I'm in one tiny part of the big picture of God being revealed throughout the earth. Everyone should read this book.

Some Good Reading Prayer But Some Bad As Well,
By
This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
I first of all want to say that I am thankful for the 24-7 prayer movement. Church history shows us that revival only comes when God's people seek His face (Isaiah 55:6) and as John Wesley said, "God does nothing in the earth realm but through prayer." Jesus taught us to pray for God's kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10) and He also taught us to pray always and not lose heart (Luke 18:1). The 24-7 prayer movement has focused people on the importance and power of true prayer (James 5:16-17).
This book focuses on the that movement. The book is essentially "faith building stories" meant to inhance your passion for prayer. The tone of the book is one of conversations on prayer and shows people not just talking about prayer but actually seeking the heart of God for this generation. Miracles, salvation, etc. will only come, writes the author, when the children of God hunger for God in prayer. The book's stories do increase your heart for prayer as you see what ordinary people are doing for the kingdom through prayer. The problems with this book are twofold for me. First, I would have appreciated a greater focus on the Word of God about prayer. People can pray but we must pray biblically (1 John 5:14-15). Prayer can become nothing more than mysticism when you abandon what the Scriptures teach about prayer. Further, prayer can be experience based instead of Bible based and then it leads only to failure when the emotions run out. We are to pray because God has said for us to do so in His Word (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and not just because of experiences or the stories of others. Second, the author tends to have some emergent leanings. In fact, he recommends Brian McLaren in this book. The emergent movement is not an orthodox movement and their rejection of sound theology will only lead to chaos and heresy which always produces immorality. The emergents clear rejection of absolute truth, sound doctrine, and holding firmly to the faith once for all given to the saints (Jude 3-4) will produce failure. I would that the author would not just reject the emergents but clearly call them to abandon their false ideas for the truths of Scripture and Scripture alone. Overall I would recommend other books on prayer besides this one. The works of E.M. Bounds, Leonard Ravenhill, A.W. Tozer, Samuel Chadwick, or Charles Spurgeon are much more biblically based than this book. The works of Ravenhill, for example, will spur you on to not only true prayer but to praying God's heart through God's Word.

Makes you wonder who you're hanging out with,

Greig's book was an amazing first hand account of how God can take a small idea and let it explode. In reading Pete's journey through the whole process we get a sense of not only what it may be like to run this kind of prayer structure but also a what it may look like to run a culturally relevant religious organization. Outside the box, this book will challenge you on many fronts, especially regarding who we who are already christians are currently hanging out with. For those of us in ministry, it reminds that Christ came to heal the sick, and the power of Greig's stories are enough to make one sell their truck and move halfway across the world to join up. Nevertheless, this book is not the whole christian story for the whole emerging christian church. Taking this book with a grain of salt, one must know that not all of being a christian revolves around this structure of prayer, and although exciting and extreme, 24-7 serves better as a compliment to the christian life today, rather than the main course.

What a terrific read this proved to be for me! It came on the recommendation of a good friend who suggested it because we are on the journey towards 24/7 intercessory worship here in our own city.I appreciate the authors not pulling any punches; there is grit in this story. Hands are getting dirty and there are some disappointments for these prayer pioneers... but they are unapologetic nor are they self-serving in offering glimspes of the costs and sacrifices in their obedience. And what is also clearly depicted in this nonfiction account of these prayer rooms cropping up around the world is that God is building this: opening doors, giving provision and the faith to continue forward to encourage and bless others who are hearing the call to night and day prayer. Get the book, you will not be disappointed. We have our own prayer initiative underway locally (http://www.charlottepraying.com) and it was tremendously encouraging to read how others are responding to this call to minister to God via sustained worship and intercession. As you read this, don't be surprised to find your eyes lifted to heaven and the whisper of Christ calling you to stand before Him in a similar way in your own city.

Invitation,
This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
My goodness. This book will simply encourage you to jump on board what the Holy Ghost is doing in the world today. Ceasing are the days of major preachers, world wide music acts, and big time Christian hot shots, God is calling His bride back to prayer. The "popular" one's are the individuals who march on their knees crying out to God for this generation. This book enhanced my prayer time, in fact, it found a way into my prayer time. If you are a young adult, youth, or youth worker, prayerless or prayer-full this is a must read. Seriously.

This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
Red Moon Rising is an account of what God is doing right now to raise up this generation to meet the needs of the lost and hurting. I devoured the book in 2 days. I wept as I saw God pour out and bring people into an intimate relationship with Him through prayer. If you're not sure that God is at work, then read this book. He is showing up in incredible ways. I'm purchasing a dozen or more to hand out to our youth. If this is God at work (which I firmly believe it is), then He will call these youth into prayer and revival. It's a must read for every Christian.

Venga (Come on)!,
This review is from: Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation (Paperback)
Once you pick up this book, you might want to settle in and fasten your seat belt as you go on an adventure with the Creator of adventure! This book is chalk full of the testimony of God's move through the faithful that believe communication with Him can change the world as we know it! I must admit, the layout of the book took a jab at my linear mind, but as I kept reading I got a hold of the flow and many times read a chapter more than I intended to.
History, testimony, stories of radical obedience, poetry, visions; this book has it all with short and to the point glimpses into this prayer movement that is literally changing the world as we know it. I was convicted many times at my judgmental attitude towards the "punks" that I see on the streets throughout life to read of many like these who are gathering all hours through the night to see neighbors, nations and generations changed with the love of Jesus Christ. I highly recommend this book and warn you that it will burn a desire in you to "burn" 24/7 in prayer and believe that God is just close enough to hear and answer. Read it, pass it on and continue this movement of God through your prayers to see the darkest places in this world cease to be dark any longer! VENGA!

Do you want to see the book of Acts come alive? Then laugh, cry, and be amazed as the author communicates Jesus alive in the 21st century with signs and wonders. In the midst of a postmodern age, the author is a story teller relating how the "lost generation of youth" is rediscovering the ancient practice of prayer and its results bringing revival across the world. It is a book of hope.
