Editorial Reviews

Review
Red Mountain is a deeply American story of young love, idealism, ignorance, and tragedy, set against a background of changing times in the American South. It is gripping, poignant, and utterly real. Reading this novel, you will feel it as if it were your own life, your own wounds, being lifted up from the well of memory. ----Alicia Ostriker

Product Description
Set in Birmingham Alabama in 1965, this is the story of a young working class couple, who put themselves through college, struggle to find love and ultimately meaning in a world challenged by the Civil Rights Movement and waves of new thought that challege the traditions of their struggling, narrow, and complicated families. Ultimately, it is the struggle of two young people, to live honestly and bravely amidst personal and societal tumult.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly written period piece, June 12, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
The south has always been viewed as more conservative as a whole versus the rest of the country - how did they deal with the cultural revolution of the 1960s? "Red Mountain: Birmingham, Alabama, 1965" is the story of a young couple of this era standing against the backwards thinking, ignorance while pushing for their own idealism, love, and sexual liberation, keystones of the era. A brilliantly written period piece, "Red Mountain: Birmingham, Alabama, 1965" is a top pick for community library collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changes, March 5, 2009
By Judith Bebelaar (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
College years always mean change, and change calls forth excitement, possibility, and danger. How many stories do you know of young people in college years whose lives take a tragic turn: shattered dreams, accidents, suicides? Charles Entrekin's vivid, honest, heart-catching book, Red Mountain, is a book about young people caught up in that time of change in the context of that great decade and more of passionate, peaceful, violent Change, the Civil Rights Movement. The story takes place in Birmingham, Alabama, 1965.

Many of the scenes remain etched in your mind: Eddie, the main character, at the Ray Charles, Lena Horne concert on a nearby black campus, he and Chrissy and their friends Doug and Tim the only white people in the huge crowd; the fire Eddie builds of what's left of his and Chrissie's life together in Montgomery; Chrissy and Eddie's baby, feverish, sleeping in an orange crate stuffed with clothes smelling of spoiled milk.

The book leaves you feeling you know these characters, that they are now part of your life as the turmoil and triumphs of the 1960's are part of all our American lives.
