The taste is not bitter. It is sour, a pleasant sour, kind of like those really weak sour candies we used to eat as kids. It's almost nostalgic. I believe this is done to hide the true bitterness of the artificial sweetener, which is genius! Most companies assume that because it's a low carb drink there's nothing they can do about the taste (imo). But this company just reinvented it.
The only problem I have with the drink is the carbonation. I always put my energy drinks in a clear glass the first time I drink them to look for color and it was the loudest carbonation i've ever heard from any drink! It ruins the smoothness and makes it a little harder to drink. But seeing as some people prefer it that way, I wouldn't find it fair to knock off stars just for that little thing.
Also, the can is sleek. Black with red and silver accents, and "Red|Rain" on the front. Will look great with the rest of my collection.
The price is also amazing. Less than $12 for a 12 pack of energy drinks is always a good deal.
All in all:
Can design: 6/10
It's an energy drink. It tastes good. It's sugar free.
With no flavor advertised I had no idea what I was in for. Unfortunately it wasn't a great surprise. This has a very generic energy drink flavor, you know the underlying flavor of pretty much all sugar free energy drinks. A bit fruity and a bit tart. Red Rain has even more of a sour bite to it than Rock Star's Zero Sugar.
This was too bitter of a drink for me, especially the last few drinks that were at room temperature.
The second one I poured into a glass with ice, this watered it down and lessened the bitterness. Still not a drink I enjoy.
Red Rain's prices are great and I will definitely be trying more of their products in the future.
Red Rain please use some watermelon flavoring in your next low carb energy drink.
There are 20 calories per can for anyone curious, I know I was.
I still prefer SF Rockstar, but at this price, I picked up a few cases.
Energy Punch: Average. It offers the same "punch" as any of the other more expensive (2 servings) energy drinks out there. It's not weak, like a Monster Rehab, or as strong as some other specialty energy drinks at 3X+ the price.
Bottom Line: if you're reading this, you're obviously interested enough. At this price, especially if you have Prime, try it! If it's not your thing, donate the rest of your case to a college student near you.
Cons: This product tasted awful. I have never met an energy drink that I didn't like, sugar or non, but this was undrinkable to me. I couldn't give it away to anyone because it tasted so bad.
How I Made It Work: I had to mix the drink with orange juice. I would take a regular cup, fill it about halfway with orange juice, then fill the rest with Red Rain Energy Drink. This mixture was actually delicious, probably because this mixture tasted just like a carbonated orange juice.
So I docked it a star because, lets face it red bull does not taste all that good. This is the price we should be paying for energy drinks but RedRain should really work on some more low calorie flavors.
If you like RedBull, give this a try. For less than a dollar a can I will continue to choke down its RedBull flavor or switch to their energy shots. The energy shots are better tasting.
