Product Description

Build a small empire in a land of legends! Eight-Minute Empire: Legends is a standalone sequel to the area control game Eight-Minute Empire and does not require the original game to play. Just like the original game, players take turns selecting a card from six on display. The card has an action that the player takes immediately, and actions help players take over the map but what's new and different in this version? Instead of goods, cards now have special abilities, which give players unique advantages and ways to break the rules throughout the game Each card has a unique, beautiful illustration of a fantasy creature or location A modular board for increased variety New variants Is Eight-Minute Empire: Legends still playable in eight minutes? Yes, but only if you hurry!

I'm a big strategy board game fan - my all-time favorites are Puerto Rico, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan and Diplomacy.

I purchased this game thought KickStarter and I brought this game in to play at work the other day. The eight-minute thing certainly caught my attention, as the typical strategy game we enjoy playing takes upwards of an hour or more.

Firstly, the rules are pretty unique and a blend of several other games I've played in the past. It's hard to pin down exactly what games this is similar to, as it's a nice mix of expansion and battling.

GAMEPLAY
I'd say it took us about 20 minutes to fully parse the rules and start playing. Once play started, it was pretty easy and all 4 players got into it. It definitely seems to be one of those games you need to play a few times to really hone in on a strategy. It did take us about an hour to learn and play, but the mechanics are simple enough that I think we'd be able to get it down to 15 minutes or so. There are special rules for 2 or 3 players, and we didn't try them yet, but there were many special expansions available for more advanced play.

OVERALL
I would highly recommend this game to fans of strategy games - in fact, it's light weight enough (like Carcassonne) for people who don't usually play strategy games to enjoy.

I bought this game after having heard good things about its predecessor.

Although the rules are very simple, it is an extremely fun area-control game. Because players need to consider both the duration powers and the one-time actions found on cards, each player's turn usually takes more than 30 seconds. When playing with 3-4 players, this means that the game will likely last about 20 to 25 minutes. While this makes the title a bit deceptive, I find the game length to be perfect.

The lack of text on most cards also makes it easy to introduce this game to people who don't speak much English.

The changes in Legends definitely improve on the original. In particular, moving across the sea now costs more movement points, but is not restricted to special cards. There are also many more bonuses on the cards making their selection even more tricky.

Finally, the use of 4 modular maps (with backs and fronts) means there are many more configurations to play.

The only caveat to both this and the original is that they are not really "8 minute" games. Expect 15-20 minutes or even 30 minutes for new players. Hardly a problem, but I've yet to play a game in under 10 minutes.
