Biography

Janus - is an ancient, two-faced Roman god of gateways and beginnings. Also the root word of January, Janus is a mythological figure that looks both forward and back and symbolizes change and transformation.

To their fans’ dismay, in mid-2008 JANUS disappeared from their hometown rock scene in Chicago...they secretly slaved away on a new project. This project was to be ... Read more in Amazon's Janus Store

Editorial Reviews

Review

If you don't like this band Janus, you should probably punch yourself in the face. I predict big things for these guys. I hear Chevelle, I hear Linkin Park. Good stuff! --Scott Rizzuto APD/MD KPNT

There are a few bands that, given the opportunity, could take the radio by storm. Janus is a perfect example of this type of band. If they were given the chance, and played...on radio stations alongside all of our alternative "favorites" (sound-alikes), they could earn themselves hordes of fans. --AbsolutePunk.net

Product Description

Hailing from Chicago, Janus slaved for over a year to create "Red Right Return". The project was uncompromising in every aspect; from producing and engineering, to songwriting and branding, the band was going to do it on their own and do it better than anyone else in the business. They recorded, produced, created all the themes, digital presence, and artwork on their own. Janus has now found an amazing partner in REALID Records to take that record to the fans. They are poised for success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD September 28, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I saw Janus on tour with Framing Hanley and Transmit Now (Both of which are awesome). After seeing them play I was instantly hooked. They have a great sound, and really bring back a solid rock sound. Overall I think the cd is great. 'Eyesore' is just awesome and my fav from the CD, 'If I Were You' is a good second track for me. 'Stranger' and 'The Nerve' are also worth mentioning. Overall I would suggest giving the cd a good listen to. One of the better CDs I have picked up recently.
-After doing some searching I think I found an older CD by these guys. The cd is titled 'Armor' and from what I could find is from 2004. I haven't verified it, but so far it sounds like them. This cd is pretty good as well.

Janus was not even on my radar before I caught their single "Eyesore" on a local radio station late one night. I instantly fell in love with the intensity of the main riff, the catchy prechorus, and the perfect balance of clean and harsh vocals throughout. I especially liked the tone of lead singer David Scotney's screaming. With so many things to love in just one song, I immediately picked up Red Right Return to see what other gems it might contain.

Sadly, there are not many other standouts on this record- only one, in fact, and it's the very first song. "Six Letters Sent" kicks off the album with an appropriate bang. Like "Eyesore," this track opens with a riff that makes the listener want to move. It has a catchy chorus and a nice balance of singing and screaming. It convinces the listener to get excited about hearing the rest of this subpar album.

It's hard for me to pinpoint just where Red Right Return fell apart for me, which is why I have concluded that there are numerous glaring flaws on this album. A lot of the songs have catchy vocal melodies, which is great, but Scotney sounds like a cross between Pete Loeffler of Chevelle and Jesse Hasek of 10 Years without ever managing to be as creative (or as good) as either singer. Scotney also doesn't employ his screaming as much as "Eyesore" led me to believe he would. Even worse (and as at least one other reviewer has mentioned), a lot of the screaming he does is actually just ultra-high-pitched shrieking under his clean vocals (seen at its worst on "If I Were You" and "The Nerve").

What of the guitars? Partly because of the array of computerized effects Janus incorporates into their songs but mostly because the riffs are just unoriginal and bland, the axemen often get lost in the shuffle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut January 14, 2013

well crafted songs. Great singer. I believe this one is better than Nox Aeris, the one with "stains". 2 more words required, there we go.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like 1 track, you'll like them all January 10, 2011

The other positive reviews pretty much cover everything about this CD. I just wanted to add that if you like any of the singles off this disc, then you will definitely like the entire CD. Its not a bait-and-switch one-hit wonder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album December 5, 2010

I first heard Janus on XM Radio. I have yet to hear them on mainstream radio in Los Angeles. It would be nice though as this band deserves much more recognition. I've listened to this album all the way through numerous times and I'm waiting in antisipation for a follow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album October 1, 2010

i can't remember the last time i bought an album and loved every single song on it. The first time i heard of Janus was when my local rock station played Eyesore for the first time. It was different from what i usually listen to and decided to take a chance. It is well worth it. I can't even pick the best songs because they are all great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Janus June 20, 2010

I saw these guys last year at Scout Bar with Framing Hanley and The Veer Union and they rocked the place up. The cd sounds alot like Breaking Benjamin if your a fan of them. Its really hard and a bit soft at times but still a great cd to listen to. My brother even got the autograph of the entire band at the concert.
