Red River Valley, 1941 film
The film begins with a song while a couple ride in the late afternoon. The party is interrupted by the noise of an explosive. Are robbers blowing the bank's safe? Can they be caught? A fast car would be helpful. Roy finds a clue. [No moulage of tire tracks?] Who could be involved? An owl screeches. The Red River will be dammed to create electric power. [We learn who is involved.] How can they finance the dam now? Roy explains the dilemma. Allison offers a deal: sell the stock to the owners of that gambling casino. There is an objection to this financial deal. Why were there so many accidents during construction? Whose car matched that hub cap design? Roy and his group leave for El Paso for their next job. But Roy has plans for an undercover investigation. Roy discovers where that medallion came from, but Murdoch's gang catches them! There are gun shots and a car chase. The dogs have treed an intruder! Roy explains his suspicions to the Sheriff, to no avail. Who benefitted from these events? Roy warns against monopoly control of the water supply, then acts to prevent a meeting of the stockholders. [Not a good example?] The Sheriff's daughter outsmarts Roy! Sally the telephone operator takes the message, then thinks quickly and leaves. Roy has a plan for a remote broadcast to El Paso. Sally will help. Allison has a suspicion, and acts on it. Roy's band plays in jail. The lumber supplier wants his money right now. Roy has a plan, he needs help. "It's a jailbreak!" There is a car chase for action. Roy discusses how the stolen money could be laundered as winnings at that gambling casino. They eat beans around their campfire. Roy has plans. Roy and his band ride to the "Casa Rio". Allison plans to buy control of the Water Company. Roy intervenes to stop the sale. There is smoke and fire, people run outside. Allison runs back inside to rescue his paper money. "It's in the bag." The newspaper headline has good news. There is a hayride for a happy ending. There is another song. This story has a complex plot for a low-budget movie. It plays fast and loose with the law too. The message in this movie explains the value of a municipal owned water company, and how crooks want to seize control for their evil ends. Without the western setting the story is similar to a short story by Chandler or Hammett. The idea of using a fire to make someone get a hidden object came from a Sherlock Holmes story. So too the idea of leaving in order to return secretly ("The Hound of the Baskervilles").
