Editorial Reviews

Worldwide platinum-selling artist John Butler Trio returns with their first live album in five years. Live at Red Rocks captures JBT's explosive, uplifting and inspired live show on a June evening at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, CO. The collection features 22 songs spanning JBT's entire repertoire including choice cuts from critically-acclaimed albums April Uprising (2010) and Grand National (2007). Both albums yielded chart-topping US Triple-A singles, One Way Road & Better Than, and garnered rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics.

John Butler has put out several live releases so far, most notably Live at St. Galen and Living 2001-2002. What separates this album from Butler's previous live releases is that this time, he doesn't just run rough-shod over his bassist and drummer. For someone like Butler, that is a difficult temptation to avoid. He is an accomplished guitarist, particularly skilled with a slide and with finger-picking. His style has evolved into a distinctive blend of acoustic blues, rock, funk and reggae. He also likes to get flashy with his technique. So, the fact that he used to treat his backing band as, well, a backing band shouldn't be surprising. On Live at Red Rocks, though, he gives bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Nicky Bomba nearly as much time in the spotlight as he takes for himself. The longest track on this album is Good Excuse (from Grand National), which clocks in at 17 minutes. Most of the track, though, is devoted to Luiters and Bomba stretching out on their own. Butler doesn't shy away from the spotlight, and there are plenty of Butler guitar licks throughout the album (plus some banjo and Weissenborn...), but if you are hoping for 2 hours of Butler showboating, this won't be the album for you. Luiters and Bomba are solid musicians, and they mesh well with Butler, which makes for a rewarding album. Butler has also stopped repeating riffs to the same degree that he used to, which makes his playing more satisfying as well.

The DVD has good 5.1 surround sound, and there are a few nice auditory tricks that make use of the 5.1 mix, particularly with the percussion. Visually, the DVD doesn't do that much.

I'll keep this short and sweet. JBT is awesome, I don't think I have ever bought anything by them I did not love. There are a lot of good songs on this live recording from their past few albums.

I would buy the CD version over the MP3 version, simply because this is actually a 2CD AND DVD in one package (the description lists it as a single CD) and the DVD is awesome! I would pay the price JUST FOR THE DVD!
