Years from now, one of the biggest mysteries in horror will be how an excellent movie like "Red Rover" sat on the shelf for several years seeking a theatrical release only to end up not simply heading straight to DVD, but heading to DVD virtually unpromoted, apparantly released only in Canada (most US locations don't seem to carry it) leaving it to, in American stores, only be available from those who've taken the extra effort to track it down and make it available; I'm really glad to see it got on here. One good thing about this route: it gives another definitive proof - as if more were needed after a number of great 'direct-to-DVD' titles over the last couple of years, that just because a movie doesn't have a big mega-advertised theaterical run doesn't mean it's not one of the best titles you can pick up.

The main characters of "Red Rover" are Will and Kylie (played by William Baldwin and Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), a brother and sister who inherit all the possessions of their father following his recent passing, including a grand old manor on an island off the coast of New Brunswick that the siblings never knew the family had. Will is a doctor just on the verge of starting up his own practice, married to a woman named Diane (Brenda James), and the older of the two siblings. Kylie is a deeply troubled girl, traumatised by seeing her mother burn to death while she was a child, who's attempted suicide a number of times and only recently left the care of a psychiatric hospital. From the beginning, there's a vague impression that she may have witnessed other troubling sights as a child in addition to her mother's death.
