5.0 out of 5 stars "Red Ryder B-Western Series ... Allan Lane as Red Ryder ... VCI Home Video", April 21, 2005
This review is from: Red Ryder Double Feature, Vol. 8 (DVD)
VCI Entertainment presents another of its popular Red Ryder series starring Allan "Rocky" Lane as Ryder and Bobby Blake as Little Beaver ~ on this double bill both films were personally handled by legendary B-western director R.G. Springsteen ~ Earle Snell was the screenwriter and produced and released by Republic/Sidney Picker Productions ~ with the regular stock company coming to the rescue.

First up is "RUSTLERS OF DEVIL'S CANYON" (1947-B&W-58 mins)
Allan Lane (Red Ryder), Bobby Blake (Little Beaver), Martha Wentworth (the Duchess), Peggy Stewart (Bess), Roy Barcroft (Mr. Clark), Tom London (Sheriff), Emmett Lynn (Blizzard)
Red Ryder (Allan Lane) returns from the Spanish American war to find rustlers in control...when homesteaders arrive, they start a fight between them and the ranchers...can the Sheriff (Tom London) handle this alone...Red tries to solve the problem not knowing a trusted friend (Roy Barcroft) is the leader of the rustlers and knows of Red's plan...will Roy Barcroft outwit Red and celebrate a victory...or will Red and Little Beaver (Bobby Blake) once again foil the plans of corrupt villains that prey on all innocent actors working for the Republic Studios...stay tuned and find out!

Let's look at the second outing "SANTA FE UPRISING" (1946-B&W-56 mins)
Allan Lane (Red Ryder), Bobby Blake (Little Beaver), Martha Wentworth (the Duchess), Barton MacLean (Crawford), Jack LaRue, Tom London, Dick Curtis, Emmett Lynn, Edmund Cobb, Keane Duncan, Forrest Taylor.
The Aunt of Red Ryder (Allan Lane), The Duchess (Martha Wentworth) arrives in town protect her property...a town big-shot, Crawford (Barton MacLane) is the leader an outlaw gang...Crawford tries to prevent her from reaching her destination...but Red intercepts this plan and it doesn't play out...town marshal gets too close to the truth and is making it too hot for all concerned...Crawford has his number one boy Luke (Dick Curtis) kidnap Red's Indian friend Little Beaver (Bobby Blake)...will this be the end for our favorite Indian Sidekick...what is Red's plan to make things right for all the cast in this first rate B-Western...don't go anywhere cause the final chapter is afoot!

Special Features are...Trailer...B-Western Promos...Bill Elliot Promos...THE ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER SERIAL (1940), Chapter 5 & 6...Scene Selection Menu...Text/Photo Galleries...Poster Art...Comic Book Art Gallery...Biographies
Allan Lane was perhaps best known as the voice of MR. ED on the hit TV show...but to many of his B-Western Fans he was known by the nickname "Rocky," Lane as his later films displayed with excellent reviews.

RED RYDER SERIES:
1. Marshal of Reno (1944)
2. The San Antonio Kid (1944)
3. Vigilantes of Dodge City (1944)
4. Sheriff of Las Vegas (1944)
5. Great Stagecoach Robbery (1945)

If you enjoyed this volume the next twelve volumes will have you roped and hogtide ~ the Red Ryder Double Feature Series is a must have for all of us who grew up riding the trails with Fred Harman's newspaper comic strip character which was popular during 1936 to 1964 --- during that time I discovered Dell Comics and the stories and artwork of Harman's hero Red Ryder --- now on DVD we can relive those early days when Red Ryder, Little Beaver and the Duchess made the west a safe place live --- B-Westerns reigned for all the little cowboys and girls who made a trip to the local theater to watch their favorite hero Red Ryder ---Western Classics, all my heroes have been cowboys!

Total Time: 114 mins ~ VCI/Entertainment 8409 ~ (02/24/2004)
