3.0 out of 5 stars Skeletal look at Red's career, November 8, 2009
This review is from: Red Skelton: A Career in Laughter [VHS] (VHS Tape)
VIDEO TREASURES, issuer of RED SKELTON: A CAREER IN LAUGHTER, is probably related to the GOODTIMES company. This LP speed non-HiFi tape is hampered by many blurry film clips and a majority of segments that are far too short.

Narrator Mike Eagen is pleasant enough as he moves quickly through Red's cinematic and TV careers. He doesn't mention personal stuff like Skelton's drinking problem and temper, the death of his 12-year-old son and wife's later suicide.

PROGRAM--
Silent film of Red as clown, supposedly with the Hagenbeck & Wallace circus.
Color lobby cards and b&w movie stills.
Trailer clips: ZIEGFELD FOLLIES (1945); THREE LITTLE WORDS (1950).
Excerpts of NBC half-hour Skelton show: Clem Kadiddlehopper used car ad. Lord Beaverbrook's Clivedon's Crumpet Juice spot. G.I. Willie Lump Lump makes tossed salad for 1000 soldiers. J. Newton Numbskull as magician. Mime of slo-mo tennis game. Topsy Turvy room skit. Red shows his two 1951 premiere season Emmys then does monologue.
Lobby cards and trailer clips: TEXAS CARNIVAL (1951); THE CLOWN (1953).
Red has health problems and he's dropped by NBC but picked up by CBS after a sell-out Las Vegas gig.
On his first CBS show, Red razzes NBC and does spoof of Brando in ON THE WATERFRONT (1954).
Presents Look Awards to and jokes with Walt Disney, Jack Lemmon and Bing Crosby.
1955 season clips: Red and butler Reginald Denny invent anti-smog liquid that mobster George Raft wants the formula for. Peter Lorre at home in haunted house wants Red to teach him how to be a comedian.
Live TV: CLIMAX episode, "Public Pigeon No. One."
Jack Benny visits on "Shower of Stars." ('56)
Trailer clips: AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS (1956); PUBLIC PIGEON NO. ONE (1957), his last starring role.
ADV: Red Skelton character masks.
Show clips: Freddie the Freeloader at home. Cauliflower McPugg boxes Vincent Price.
During Red's '61 illness, Ed Sullivan fills in and plays his characters: Ed Kadiddlehoper, Edeye, Eddie the Freeloader.
"The Fool & the Feather" mime for the United Nations.
1st hour show ('62): Silent spot with Harpo Marx.
George Appleby witnesses street crime.
Bolivar Shagnasty meets Scarface (Gerald Mohr).
Deadeye brings swayback horse into saloon.
San Fernando Red and Amanda Blake try to sell a mink to Billy Gilbert.
Mention of his final 1960s film roles.
Clem with Jack Albertson and pooping cow.
Return to NBC and half-hour format after CBS cancels him in 1970.
Later career: His paintings, TV specials, 1986 Governor's Award.
Classic "May Gawd Bless" close.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 71:30
