Preschool Teacher,
By Karen K (Watertown, SD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red and Slim One Hot Day (Hardcover)
Last month at preschool was our introduction of the Letter S. So Red & Slim were the featured guest book of the day. I wish I could of videotaped the faces as I read the book to my morning and afternoon class. It's official in the eyes of my preschool children that Red and Slim are two cool dudes.
For what it's worth, I have read hundreds of books to children and the children let you know with their faces and bodies which books are a hit and which ones just don't cut it. You made my day! Listed below are the things I like about this book: 1. R & S follow each other in the alphabet. It's a reinforcement of the letters that they are learning. 2. In my experience children love pets: They identify with cats and dogs the most. 3. Utopia Joe, your characterization and detail in facial and body expression is superb: Each time I read it I noticed something new that I had not noticed in the prior reading. 4. You identify a problem and Red & Slim have to come up with a solution of teamwork to get to the water. 5. Water & friendships are vital to life. You need both to stay alive. Some children even grinned and appeared to catch the end phrase. "Your all wet! The next day I presented Red & Slim to my three and four year old classes and Red & Slim made their day great! The book tended to be a little on the long side but they paid attention through it all. One little boy in our afternoon class was having great difficulty in being a friend the day the book was presented. At the end of the day my wish was that I had another "Red & Slim: Stop! Time Out, That hurts!" to read to soothe and erase the negative behavior. Take Care , God Bless and KEEP WRITING, KEEP ILLUSTRATING! Don't stop now. As a teacher, parents & grandparents need GREAT books to nourish our children.

This book is all single syllable words to keep kids into the story instead of stumbling on words. This concept should get kids reading faster & enjoy it!..... AMAZING!

I bought this book for both of my kids... Dawson (7) and Chloe (5) because of the single syllable words that tell the story of Red and Slim! This gives the reader a better success rate! My son Dawson loves to play teach his younger sister how to read! I really enjoy them interacting together in such a positive way! Great for the beginner, Great for the adults too! I spend more time with them reading this book over and over again! Thanks Stamp!!! Can not wait until the rest of the series comes out! I also picked-up another copy of this book and gave it to Dawson and Chloe's cousins... they are the same age and are having just as much fun as Dawson and Chloe learnig how to read! So pass it on...

This book is fantastic! For us it was a god send. Our 7 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with dyslexia and as you might imagine, reading for her has been very hard, frustrating and basically no fun. When she picked up Red and Slim and was able to read it relatively quickly AND follow the story line... she was elated... her self-esteem soared! She no longer feels like she 'can't read'... Red and Slim is her favorite book hands down! Anytime she is feeling insecure about her reading abilities, she picks it up and has a read... although now I think she has it memorized! It has been a true gift for her... thanks Red and Slim!

There is so much more to Red and Slim than the story...,

From the moment I learned of the Syllabets concept--where the story is told entirely by single syllable words--I knew Red and Slim One Hot Day was (1) exactly (2) perfect for my granddaughter. A headstrong first grader, my Jacqueline has been juggling her love of books and desire to read independently with unexplainable frustration as she labors to decode the mysteries of print.
Waiting for Red and Slim One Hot Day to arrive produced a delightful period of anticipation where Jacquelyn pondered a series of cards I created--using single syllable words, of course!! "Red and Slim are on their way," she read. "Where will Red and Slim sleep?" Delighted and intrigued, she (and her siblings) speculated who Red and Slim were and how they might arrive. It's been about a week since Red and Slim One Hot Day appeared, and Jacquelyn has read the book by herself at least twenty times. (I've also observed her older siblings reading the book a fair amount of times...they just like the story!) It's not magic; Jacquelyn still pauses at some words. But the significantly heightened success this reading experience has produced is simply priceless. Each night, Jacquelyn wraps her copy of Red and Slim One Hot Day in a special blanket just beneath her bed. Tomorrow, she is taking her best bound friend with her when first grade resumes after a spring break. She can't wait to read this book for Ms. Olsem. Jacquelyn is eager to read what Red and Slim will do next! How many single syllable adventures can Red and Slim have? What will Red and Slim do when they encounter their first two-syllable word? One seven-year-old reader and her grandma are watching...

Red & Slim One Hot Day is a fun and lighthearted kid's book about Red the dog and Slim the cat. They seem to live in Texas or Arizona - they are in the desert. Their owner kicks them out of their house and they go on a journey to find a way to cool off. They meet a bug and a bus and the humor is fun for kids AND adults! You will laugh out loud while you read this story!!!
What is really neat is this story is written entirely in one-syllable words! What a cool concept - my niece (who is 4) was able to read it without ANY trouble and she remembered the story and wanted to read it again! |
