5.0 out of 5 stars Great New Run of Red Sonja Continues with Origin Story
Dynamite is doing a fantastic job in resurrecting Red Sonja-- and doing it much much better than Marvel or any of the other previous attempts to tell tales of the "She-Devil with a Sword."

The artwork alone, especially Mel Rubi's version of Sonja, is worth the purchase. Mel Rubi seems to understand better than most, if not all previous Red Sonja artists...

1.0 out of 5 stars poor
Besides the very nice cover this follow up to the 1st volume is very poor. The story really lacks any depth & falls too short on delivery. Personally I was really disappointed with this 2nd volume.

This review is from: Red Sonja: She-Devil With a Sword, Vol. 2: Arrowsmith (Hardcover)

Mel Rubi seems to understand better than most, if not all previous Red Sonja artists that she is supposed be both attractive AND look like a real warrior. And while it is still fantasy, i.e. Sonja is-- for lack of a better word-- HOT, Rubi succeeds where others have failed. (Perhaps due to an earlier review, the cover was changed. I personally liked the original cover by Mel Rubi with Sonja in the acrobatic action leaping position defending herself against maurading wolves...)

The story is Dynamite's rendition of Red Sonja's origin. The plot continues from where the first issue led off, adding in flashback scenes (and more simplified art) of Sonja as a young girl and developing the "origin" story-line. It is interesting enough to please most readers of fantasy. Fans of Sonja, Conan, and the fantasy genre will enjoy this series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't get behind the cover, August 20, 2008
This review is from: Red Sonja: She-Devil With a Sword, Vol. 2: Arrowsmith (Hardcover)
I've been going through a kind of Red Sonja phase. In the last few months I found and reread a Red Sonja novel I'd read as a kid, I reread some of my old Red Sonja Marvel comics, and I saw the movie. I recently bought and read a couple of the new Dynamite Entertainment Red Sonja comics and thought that they were good enough that I'd want to try more... So why would I give this particular book low marks? Purely the cover.

I know they'll be some person who will comment that "You can't judge a book by its cover", but I would counter that the book's presentation is a valid point for criticism. You can't put an objectionable image on a book cover (Red Sonja stabbing what may be a dog, possibly is a wolf) and expect that some people aren't going to be offended.

Maybe the scene displayed on the cover is part of the story and makes sense in the context of the story. Fine, but the decision to put that image on the cover is a marketing decision. I object to the marketing genius who thought, "It would be cool to use the picture of her cutting into the dogs/wolves to sell the book."

I like what I have read in the Dynamite Comics line, so hopefully they will think a little more in the future about this sort of issue.
