Red Sonja at her Finest, February 21, 2009
This review is from: Red Sonja Travels (Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword) (Paperback)
I've been a fan of Dynamite's new Red Sonja series, but admittedly the series has had its ups and downs. This collection of four short stories, however, restored my faith Dynamite's ability to churn out high quality Red Sonja material. Three of the four stories are really well done, expertly illustrated. I found only the third story to be a little weak, in both art and story, but the other three more than legitimized this purchase.
In some of the stories the art seems to change-- I think this is the effect of using different colorists. In the first story, "One More Day," both the plot and the drawings show a harsher, tougher Sonja. The second tale, appropriately titled "Sonja Goes East," is the most colorful of the four and the artist introduces a Japanese-style manga art. Not my favorite view of Sonja, but well done-- especially the action sequences. The fourth and final tale ties together themes from the series, with a story about the dark god Borat Na-fori. I am not familiar with the artist of the fourth tale, but his drawing of Sonja's eyes are the most impressive-- simply piercing-- I have seen of all the series and short story Sonja artists.
While certainly fans of the new Red Sonja series will enjoy "Red Sonja Travels," this is also a great 1-off purchase and a good opportunity for someone new to Red Sonja to get acquainted to her & her world without risking getting hooked to the series.
Remember though that this an adult graphic novel, like the rest of the Red Sonja and Dark Horse's new Conan series, where beheadings and occasional gore do appear-- so certainly not for children.
