4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I've been a Rush fan since 1975. I know all the words, all the bass lines, half the guitar lines and a third of the drum rhythms. I've been known to chop up Rush for years and it can only be described as GOOD CLEAN FUN!!!Death metal has never been my genre, but this album is a blast to CRANK UP in the car at a stoplight and no one ( metalheads included) knows wtf you're...

1.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL EHHH!!!
After reading all the reviews for this CD, both good and bad, I decided to buy it because I really like Rush. My God this is horrible....I hate to judge someone elses musical taste, but come on....this just plan stinks. Not because it's too heavy or anything like that, in fact, I bought it because of that reason. These bands sound like a bunch of teenage garage bands...

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ain't nothin' like the real thing., April 4, 2007
This review is from: Red Star-Tribute to Rush (Audio CD)
It has never been a problem marketing the talentless to the tasteless. This album, with one minor exception, stands as an example to that fact.
As a long-time Rush fan I almost found listening to this CD sacrileges'.
Why would anyone dumb-down Rush's music in this way? The death-metal "vocalists" sound like they're gargling with broken glass. (My daughter actually thought they were trying to sing like the Cookie Monster!)
If you ever wondered how Rush's music would sound stripped of it's integrity, this is the album for you.
I found there was actually one track on this CD that made the purchase worthwhile: Freewill. The vocalist covering this track just nails the very high "cell of awarness" line. That kind of power and range has to be respected. Accordingly, I give him three stars for that one note.

Total garbage, except for "Tears." Should be titled "INSULT" to Rush! I can't believe anyone would publish this crap! Don't waste your time or money!

1.0 out of 5 stars this is as bad as the band A.C., April 28, 2004

This review is from: Red Star-Tribute to Rush (Audio CD)
Just damn! I've been a Rush fan for years and this is embarassing. I am also a fan of death metal. So I was a little curious. What a disaster. To me it sounds like these bands are mocking Rush. It's sort of an insult. There were 2 bands, Prototype, and Premonition, that sounded okay. They sing. They don't have the death metal growling vocals. They did the songs Red Barchetta and The Spirit Of Radio. But it's not worth the money just for those 2 bands. The rest of the cd is horrible. These bands should have done an A.C. Tribute instead. Most of the time, tributes are a joke anyway, and especially with Rush, you're better off with the real thing, but you just MUST have a Rush tribute cd, get Working Man instead. There's plenty of talented musicians on that cd, such as Billy Sheehan, James Murphy, Devin Townsend, Deen Castronovo, members of Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and stuff like that. There's only one winner for a Rush tribute. WORKING MAN! Not Red Star!

1.0 out of 5 stars Kill Me Now, January 12, 2000

This review is from: Red Star-Tribute to Rush (Audio CD)
My husband and I are die-hard Rush fans.

I hate the word "fan"!

We are Rush "connoisseurs" and I was in the local CD store when I stumbled onto "Red Star". I didn't even know that it had been released. Since we have all the imports, singles, videos, and CD's...I just KNEW that my husband would LOVE it! After one drive in the car, he promptly told me that it was the worst thing that he had ever heard (and we have some off-the-wall selections in our CD collection). He informed me that he would NEVER listen to it again.

My curiosity was killing me, so I did the unspeakable...I listened to a few tracks.

Have you ever seen a grown women cry as blood dripped from her ears? Shoot me now!

All of the negative reviews are right on target and all the positive reviews are made by individuals who obviously don't understand what it means to be a Rush "connoisseurs". It is something that the "true" Rush lovers take very seriously. You either "get" Rush OR you don't. If you do understand Rush, then you own ALL the albums (you call them that too...not CDs), you know all the lyrics, you know who the stage crews members are (because you read every word in the CD jackets), you stand in line for those perfect tickets to concerts (and YOU know that Rush is a LIVE band).

Rush followers are also, primarily, musicians. We musicians are the ones who actively listen to Rush and understand the complexity of their songs and that they have talent that cannot be surpassed by most.

Saying all that...."Red Star" is horrible! I hate that I provided these bands with some of my hard earned cash.

The only positive (and this is a stretch), is that it is one more item in our house that can be added to our Rush collection (even though it will never be played again).

Do yourself a favor and DON'T torture yourself.

It is not a tribute, it is a terrible mistake!

2.0 out of 5 stars Should I laugh or should I cry?, October 25, 1999

The cd only can be meant as a joke on Rush fans. The bands featured on this "tribute" are not very talented and the sound is muddy. I wonder how Rush could give their o.k. for this album, which is really hard to swallow for their devoted following. But somehow it's funny to listen how Rush's fine songs are pulled through the mincer, isn't it? It comes closer to the idea of a tribute album than "Working Man" did. Rush's other tribute album was just trying to duplicate their songs, while "Red Star" brings some new interpretations. However, if you liked grindcore/death metal, this album could appeal to you. All in all, you shouldn't take this release seriously, but all of us Rush fans are bored stiff with cheesy tribute albums. We keep waiting for some VITAL SIGNS from Rush themselves!

It's so bad its funny. Thats why I gave it 3 stars. It's really a good bit of comedy, it really gives Weird Al a run for his money. I laughed out loud, but really, don't waste your money.

Oh please! Who wants to hear Rush in this sad state? I am a bassist, Rush is my one and only inspiration, and I am sickened by this junk. Are these Rush fans, or jokers trying to make us sick to our stomachs? When I ever heard Temples...uuuuugh.
Well, gotta go, I have to make myself sane once again by listening to the real stuff. But Free Will was nice!

I've got to tell you that I hardly recognized these songs as RUSH tunes. These bands are certainly keeping the songs alive, but not for long. These covers are HORRIBLE!!!!!

"Subdivisions" is one of the most brilliant, powerful and inspiring pieces of rock music ever written. To hear such a holy and beautiful piece of music desecrated by these foul subhumans was almost more than I could bear. If necessary, I would have jammed ice picks into my ears to make it stop. I wouldn't expect to hear such noise from the worst garage band on earth, let alone on a recording from a real record company. This isn't even good metal. Run as far as you can from this abomination.
