5.0 out of 5 stars Like a great dinner party
I loved this book. I'm a lifelong Blue-stater who has been turning off the news for the past six years because I just can't bear to watch. But this book reminded me of my dream of hosting fabulous dinner parties where people talk about what really matters. 2.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for Funny
And this book didn't deliver it.

The author has a good voice and a lovely, light writing style. She knows how to set up a good domestic story and make it funny as sin. Unfortunately, she spends entirely too much time whining about the "liberal" North and complaining about how horrible things are in the Northeast.

As a transplanted Southerner...

I loved this book. I'm a lifelong Blue-stater who has been turning off the news for the past six years because I just can't bear to watch. But this book reminded me of my dream of hosting fabulous dinner parties where people talk about what really matters. In this book, Nancy shares what really matters to her, and whether you agree or disagree with her choices isn't the point, because (huge sigh of relief here) she isn't trying to convince us. She tries to make us laugh, and succeeds. Because of this, I'm giving her the ultimate non-fiction compliment: she reminds me of a right-wing Anne Lammott :)

Nancy French is downright funny. She has such a quirky way of viewing everyday events. I don't always agree with her politics, but I can understand her desire not to be seen as a stereotype. We are all more complex individuals than our labels suggest. Nancy's book can help you recognize the need to get to know people who think differently, and you're laughing so hard you don't realize you're learning. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too close to home, but worth every penny, October 21, 2006

This review is from: A Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle (Hardcover)
Nancy French's account of, well, her life will absolutely enthrall you on every page. She grew up in Paris, Tennessee, moved to NYC, back to Kentucky, to Philly, and back to Tennessee. She talks about marriage, motherhood, politics, fire, rock stars, the Constitution, and more, all while making you laugh and, at points, making you cry.

If you've ever been displaced, have a read through this book. If you're a conservative living in liberal territory (or vice-versa), this book will be better than a year of therapy. This book was a bit like making a new friend--one who really, truly understands. Her frank discussion of being a stranger in a strange land usually makes you laugh and always gives you insight, and perhaps some brevity, into your own struggles.

You won't be sorry you bought this book--you'll just be sorry that the sequel isn't out yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!, January 11, 2007
This review is from: A Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle (Hardcover)
A wonderful glimpse at the subtle (and not so subtle) cultural differences in our country. Mostly funny, but with some serious points, and relevant throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Personal Glimpse at Diversity in America Through Nancy's View, November 10, 2006
This review is from: A Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle (Hardcover)
The pundits love to divide our country into blue states and red states. Nancy French takes readers on an amazing journey of her life in both areas of the country. Some sections of this book are laugh out loud funny while others are thought provoking.

Through excellent and compelling writing, Nancy draws you into this theme of diversity mixed with personal experience. For anyone who has moved around the United States and lived in different segments of the population, they will easily identify with her stories. And if you haven't moved around? Well, you need to read this book as well to increase your understanding of the wide range of views in America. I admire her courage in the topics and her honesty in the writing. It's a well-done book worthy of your reading time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly made me laugh out loud, October 10, 2006
This review is from: A Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle (Hardcover)
Nancy French makes me laugh out loud while reading and that's not an easy thing to do. She blends southern charm and her aquired northern tact for a book that brings out the best from all sides. Whether you are a political junkie or just a fan of fun books, this is one to be enjoyed and shared. I hope we'll be reading much more from this Southern Liberty Bell who has a knack for being able to throw in a zigger right when it's needed!

This review is from: A Red State of Mind: How a Catfish Queen Reject Became a Liberty Belle (Hardcover)
It's been a while since I finished reading this book. I enjoyed it a great deal. I was 27 when I left the South and moved to upstate NY -- like the author I found that life was VERY different outside the South. A lot of her observations rang true and made me laugh out loud.

Very funny and a good read.
