The book was an interesting insight into the development of Soviet armor over the span of years. As a student of 20th Century World history, I enjoyed the book very much.

This book provides some interesting data - a table that provides the modifier for armor slope and more interesting armor thickness values for modern Soviet tanks. Haven't found the later anywhere else.

The slope modifiers are suspect, especially for the 60 degree frontal slope which is given as 3x basic armor thickness. The WWII Sherman and T34/76 and /85 both had 60 degree frontal armor. If the modifier is 3x their basic armor value they would have been impossible to penetrate (well, the Sherman M4 and M4A1 had a lot of 'shot traps' and vertical armor on it's glacis) by German Pak 40 or 88L56 tank guns, or the Panther's 75L70 gun. Since this wasn't the case in the war I suspect the value is 2x not 3x.

Except for that the book is useful guide to Soviet armor. Dry reading but thorough. Recommend

I enjoyed this book. The book covers many different Soviet AFVs, with a short history, and specs for each. For a book of this type, it is quite good. If you want more in-depth histories, you should get a book on each individual subject. The formatting of the book is pretty good, with each subject separated from the next with a page break. One thing that threw me was that the Table of Contents was in the back of the book, rather than in the front.

If I were 15 and only knew the Cold War from a few minutes of a History class, this book might be useful. The photo's are public domain shots from the internet. Mr Phillips text is fine but this is a very light skim of the subject. I would be upset had I paid for my copy.
