"Don't go to Ravengate. Ever!"
Meredith Miller was overwhelmed when she was suddenly appointed headmistress of Haverly Young Ladies Academy, but the talented young teacher believed she could handle the awesome administrative responsibilities and even the resentment of the other teachers. Then, a mysterious, dark-eyed child named Naida was dropped off at the school - a child whoe seemed to come from nowhere - and strange happenings began to disrupt the fragile peace of Meredith's doman. Ignoring Naida's frantic warning to stay away from the shadowy mansion that shared the school's sheltered beach on the rocky Maine coastline, Meredith was strongly drawn to Ravengate and to its owner, brooding, dark-eyed Clinton McCulloch. But when Naida's least favorite teacher suffered a freak accident, then a wasting illness, Meredith realized that Naida was not as innocent as she seemed. And when she followed a bloody trail to the beach and witnessed a sight so shocking she nearly lost her senses, Meredith knew that dark forces were at work at Ravengate. Despite her growing love for Clinton and her determination to protect the school from scandal, she knew she must either obey the odd child's desperate commands . . . or succumb to the vortex of terror that surrounded her. Excerpt: Passion's Fire I stood frozen in the shadows, watching, unable to break free of a spell which drew me unwillingly into the dark intensity of the ceremony. A pair of large hands suddenly came from behind me and clamped tightly over my mouth. I gagged as screams choked in my throat, and I struggled against firm arms that quietly pulled me back into the darkness of the trees. My strength was no match for my abductor's, but as we emerged from the woods at the ocean's edge, I moved my mouth enough to bite down on the soft flesh of the hand against my mouth. His grip lessened, and I jerked free - but only for a second. I stumbled and he had me again. I screamed as my pursuer swung me around. For a moment I thought I was staring into the face of a warlock with jet black eyes and shocks of dark hair falling forward on a broad forehead. He had a small white V-shaped scar on his tanned cheek. Bits of dried leaves clung to his wide shoulders and a tangy odor of sea, crushed grass, and moist earth mingled with the warmth of his body as he held me firmly in front of him. The moment was unreal, suspended in time.

Brooding gothic romance,

Lee Karr is a wonderful gothic romance author, and this is a fine example of her work. The elements were all familiar, yet all just right, as the heroine becomes headmistress of an old girls' school and grapples with true-to-life concepts: her age, her appearance, her loveability, in addition to mysterious threats and danger. The hero Clinton is sympathetic and likeable. Their chemistry together is most exciting. Don't miss any book by Leona/Lee Karr.
