Book Description

Private Investigator Leah Ryan is on a much needed vacation. A week in Bass Bay, Maine. Nothing but sun, sand and relaxation. No missing people. No murder. No stress.

But an hour into her vacation, Leah almost swims into a dead girl. Shark bites on the victim indicate a horrific shark attack, but closer inspection of the remains suggest that sharks aren't the only predators in Bass Bay.

As the bodies of more young women wash up on the beach, Leah is about to find out that murder doesn't take a vacation.

Red Surf is the 4rth in the Leah Ryan thriller series, and mixes humor with nail biting suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Surf Leah Ryan Thrillers. Book 4 July 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Great book. Worth the wait. I especially liked the fact that Leah wasn't throwing herself up on every man that she met.

Good storyline that kept your attention. Read this book in a few hours. Couldn't put it down. Not predictable at all yet predictable. I say that because I knew who the killer was based on the beginning of the story so I was not surprised at the ending. But the book is worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Read July 28, 2014

I got this book because it takes place in Maine. I love Maine and so does the writer. She was quick to fix a few mistakes in this book and I was very impressed by that. The book is a nice beach read. It's the fourth in a series, but each book could stand alone. If you like light mysteries, you'll love this book and it's characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Surf July 30, 2014

Leah Ryan and her PI partner Jax are on holiday, but Leah keeps finding bodies. What should have been a relaxing break turns into a serial killer nightmare, using sharks to give the killing blow. Good fast paced read with the added twist of information on the effects man is having on the shark and seal world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Red Surf August 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a pretty good read, especially since I picked it up purely for the fact that it had to do with sharks and I haven’t read the other books in the series yet. The writing and characterizations are fairly simple, but not what I would call juvenile, so it makes it an easy read. The shark behavior in this book is fairly portrayed, which honestly surprised me because I’ve read shark books by so called shark experts that are full of inaccuracies (or just plain silliness), so it was refreshing to see accurate portrayal, especially from someone not in the habit of writing shark books.

One thing that did bug me though was some of the automatic assumptions of guilt based on the “hobbies” of certain people our fearless PI’s investigate. I’m not going to say specifics because they would probably spoil the mystery, but I will say there is a difference between profiling and stereotyping, and this was clearly stereotyping (likely based in ignorance).

Despite that, Red Surf was still a nice, easy read and I will likely end up reading the other books in the series.

At first it’s typical… a private detective treats herself to a vacation & you just know she’s going to be sucked into trouble – whether she joins the investigating team in an official or unofficial capacity…. The action and drama quickly unfold though as several men (some creepy) are interested in her and she just keeps finding bodies. A trouble magnet, like your typical mystery genre-PI, however a different take than many of the typical offerings of the genre.
I found most of the information/ speculation about sharks to be accurate as well and have to respect the various perspectives on them that are provided here.

It was a great story, good read. I would just recommend that the author or her editor learn some basic grammar such as the meaning of there vs their and they’re. In a 200+ page novel, things are going to get missed but this was a recurring mistake. My only complaint – will totally read more of her work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, pretty predictable. January 3, 2015
By larryj
Format:Kindle Edition
This is standard mystery stuff and it works well, although I don't really care for the conclusion or the convoluted plot; when she co-wrote with Konrath, Tracy's Leah Ryan was a little more snappy and hard-edged, kind of threw me but I guess the storyline was more in line with snappy and hard-edged there. Anyway this is decent writing and not too sappy, so I'll probably look into more of the author's work.

Interesting mystery/horror blend with sharks. Lots of sharks. Well written genre fiction, good enough to get me to look into the author's other books.

A book that kept me on my toes with a very surprising ending. A little romance involved kept the story moving fast. A summer beach story in Maine is always a plus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very believable... take a little too ...
Not very believable . . . take a little too much suspension of belief, but the characters are OK. The neurotic promiscuity of the heroin is getting a little old.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amature!!!
This book was hard to read as the dialogues were so childish and predictable. The storyline was good either.

Not fun at all.
