Book Description

October 28, 2008
?Unsparingly frank and perceptive? (Vanity Fair) personal essays by teenage girls.

For every teen girl who thinks she?s alone, and every adult who?s dared to try to figure her out, comes this eye-opening collection in the spirit of New York Times bestseller Ophelia Speaks. In Red, fifty-eight girls?ranging in age from thirteen to nineteen, and writing from across the spectrum of geographic, socioeconomic, racial, and religious upbringings?share ?heartbreaking, hilarious, and often harrowing? (Francine Prose) essays about everything from politics to pop culture; from post-Katrina New Orleans to Johnny Depp; from the loneliness of losing a best friend to the loathing or pride they feel about their bodies.

The authors of Red are brave and honest documentarians of their own lives. These girls are the best shades of red (not pink): a little bit angry, a lot passionate. They?re on fire, and their essays speak gloriously for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great conversation-starter September 10, 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm the mother of a teenage daughter and this book was a wonderful conversation starter for us. We both read it and had several very amusing conversations about many of the essay topics. It was really funny and interesting to compare our reactions and for me, it brought back so many things that I thought about or felt as a teenage girl. For my daughter, she talked about some of the things that bother her and was quite surprised to discover that I had many of the same feelings and anxieties when I was her age.

'Red' is a wonderful, thought-provoking book and a real joy to read. I'd recommend it for any parent raising teenage girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely! July 9, 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book last October and I am not sure why I took so long to read it. It was well... amazing. Red is a collection of 58 stories, written by teenagers. Some are about self esteem, family, crushes, love, hobbies, pop culture, and the many other things. These essays will speak to you, no matter what age, you are. They are funny, cute, and sometimes heartbreaking. I didn't actually know that Jocelyn and Jordyn were in it, till shortly before reading it. It made it a little bit more awesome.
I highly recommend this to everyone. Seriously, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and unique June 16, 2009
Format:Paperback
I expected it to be interesting-- what I didn't anticipate is that it would teach me things without being didactic. Moving and funny and honest, it's book by teenagers FOR everyone. While there's tons of beautiful writing (and reading), it could easily be an amazing film or play, too. Unique.
