This stuff is just a vague approximation of Twizzlers/actual licorice.

The local stores now only carry Twizzler Licorice which is a Hershey product.

I have to limit myself to a few a day or I'd be ordering this every week.

Well folks, let's face facts. The world is broken down into two kids of people; those who like black licorice and those who do not. Now if you are in the "I hate licorice" camp, then this produce is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you are like me and grew up on the stuff, then this semi-ancient and traditional sweet really does not come better than the offerings of Red Vine. I keep a jar of this delightful stuff on my desk as I truly enjoy it. It is also helpful that my wife and grandsons are not fond of the stuff; therefore I do not have to share or stare at an empty container each time I set down at my desk.

Of course like so many things, this black and somewhat different tasting goodie is more or less an acquired taste...it is one you probably grew up with, rejected it in your younger "adult" years, and then about midlife, rediscovered the stuff. It is like another candy that falls into the category of "to appreciate it, you have had to have grown up with it," which is horehound candy; a candy which is becoming more and more difficult to find other than in specialty shops. Sometimes these old time candies are indeed the best. At the very worse, they will at least give you a trip down memory lane. Anyway....

Licorice needs to be served at room temperature. It is rather benign as to healthy candy, being quite low (almost none) in fat and this particular brand is free of preservatives. Low salt, or sodium, made it a wonderful snack for those who suffer from hypertension and it is relatively low in calories. It is one of the munchies my cardiologist approves of; candy wise, you could do worse!

the licorice is the kind I grew up with (on the west coast). There really is nothing like it. It is the right amount of molasses, and licorice flavor. It is the right "tooth" not too soft unlike the fancier ones. The only problem i had was it smelled like the plastic from the container. I had to transfer them into a metal container so they'd loose that plastic smell! Now it is a perfect BLACK licorice experience!

This product comes in a tub marked with recycle code #3, Polyvinyl chloride, PVC. The tub emits an odor, which is the pthalate plasticizer used in its manufacture. Pthalate esters have adverse effects on health and are easily absorbed by foods stored in PVC containers. The candies also pick up the odor. If you buy this, take the candy out and store it in a different container; the odor will dissipate.

It's not going to kill you - you're not being exposed to enough to make you sick (unless you're a baby and you eat the whole tub, maybe?), but it's still an inappropriate container that ruins the taste of the candy.

Since i've written this review, RedVines contacted me and sent me replacement candy, 4lbs, in 1lb bags. They were very helpful and assured me that they were in the process of changing the packaging on this product.

Licorice requires tender, loving care. Unlike hard candy, which can (and often does) sit for months in the bottom of your grandmother's purse, licorice tastes best soft and fresh. Storage should be airtight and at room temperature. Lucky for us, this order arrives in a plastic tub with a nine-month shelf life.

This order is a great value. We purchased this in addition to the Red Vines Red Original Licorice Twists. Not only are Red Vines Star-K kosher-certified with no fat and only 140 calories per serving (five pieces/vines) but you receive four pounds of licorice at an excellent price.

I use Red Vines licorice for Halloween, birthday parties and I keep a tub at the office to fend off co-workers who roam around in the afternoon, looking for a snack.

According to the Red Vines web site, "many fans heat Red Vines candy in their microwaves for 5-7 seconds or until the candy reaches the desired softness." I tried this trick and it works great, softening the black licorice and opening its herbal fragrance. The black licorice balances nicely with a cup of hot tea for an afternoon or late evening treat.

Rating: Five stars.

Of licorice made in USA, this is the best. Made by the American Licorice Company. I'm waiting for my 4th 4lb. tub of this black gold.

If you've only experienced licorice as Twizzlers, you are missing out. This tastes 1000 times better than that plastic taste from Twizzlers.

Those that like red, purple, blue, orange, chocolate or some other vines. Fine. Have at it. Just don't call it licorice it's not.
I get so disgusted when I'm offered "licorice" & it's some gawd awful vine flavor.

As stated in the other reviews, black licorice is best enjoyed fresh and soft. Imagine my disappointment when I received my Amazon box, opened my "Black Red Vines" and found them to be hard and stale. Stale to the point that they are even discolored with staleness. It makes me wonder how long my "airtight" container has been sitting in the Amazon warehouse for that to happen. I opted not to return them, as the people in my office were all waiting anxiously for them to arrive, so we will eat stale black vines for a while. But I will not be ordering them from Amazon anymore. They are just difficult to find in regular stores.
