"They'll make your heart shine" (says iMusicWeek.mu), July 14, 2001
By A Customer
"Female fronted indie pop rock duo Red to Violet come from Holland. They have selfproduced the debut album 'Red to Violet' and selfdirected the music video for debut single 'Here I Am,' one of our personal favorites. Red to Violet has a hauntingly bright and attractive sound that sings refreshingly loud to the creative spirit. They're not only pleasing to the ear, they'll make your heart shine." I wonder how many in the states have actually heard this?, January 2, 2012
Based on these reviews posting other reviews from media criticism, I would guess not many have heard them, but I have. I can see why many haven't heard their music up to this point, it's not that the music is bad, or badly produced (this is their strong point) it's that the music carries with it the baggage of new age philosophy and jingoism. A number of the songs are also turned into 5 minute song anthem jams when three minutes would have sufficed. Their sound is highly influenced by the vocals of Chrissy Hynde, and the melodic conventions of the who, mixed with wings-era Mccartney. It's well produced with engineering that ellicits warm and inviting feeling. The negatives are the way they stretch out songs, as stated before, and three minutes itself is stretching it if you prefer the lyrics to have deepening meaning, as opposed to simple repetition. This leads to their second liability and the only negative of the production; it's produced with concept of band as unit, in keeping with new age philsophy. On their shorter songs, this isn't a problem and the tracks glide on by beautifully, but on the longer songs they lack the musical divergence, continued lyricism or heft that would be necessary to defend their length. This issue often runs inline with their third issue, and this is probably the biggest issue for most, but not for me: weak vocals. The vocalist is talented and when she sticks to a certain sound that falls into her range, she sounds great, but frequently she stretches herself thin trying for a tougher sound she doesn't possess. I can understand what she's trying to do, but it's misguided. She's not in a punk band. When she goes for Debbie Harry/Chryssie Hynde the music takes off. If these guys read this, (or someone who knows them does) check out a band called Trolleyvox with a very similar sound. This could be your future, or something like it. It was experimental purchase that drew me to this release, and it's good, however there are a few areas where they could seriously improve. It's the difference between being featured on your own towns public access tv and being featured on national public television. You can get there, Red to Violet.

Collection of raving reviews..., October 14, 2000

"From their hit 'Here I Am' to the ballad 'Mr. J' the baritone vocals of EL ring through... Ecstatic overtures... This Dutch group's great sound makes it hard to classify, as it is very different from the normal sounds from the U.S.A." (album review MusicTV.com, U.S.) * "You'll find yourself immediately charmed by the essence of this melodic modern rock duo from Holland. The deep lyrical tone and soothing female vocals are sure to have you wanting to purchase their CD just to hear more... Red to Violet will soon become a frequently heard name in the music world." (videoreview USGIGTV.com, U.S.) * "Super duo from the Netherlands, what a good sounding group!" (MusiciansCafe.com, U.S.) * "I was surprised at the quality of this band and their music, which is similar to The Pretenders. The vocals are raw and beautifully presented in a full rock fashion, while the music is presented with masterful expertise. 'Here I Am' is a prime rock cut worthy of much radio attention and airplay. Not only does this band offer a great CD with a hot single, but the single also has a video. It's easy to see that this band is ready for the bigtime and well deserving of it. They have produced an album that has a number of quality songs that could all very well be chart toppers. The song that has stuck in my head all day is 'Mr J', a mellow composition with superior lyrical content. This is one CD that I'll be listening to a lot more." (album review TheGlobalMuse.com, U.S.) * "Mainstream rock with scratchy blond vocals, quiet/loud (but not too loud) guitars and radio-ready anthem choruses. Similar artists: Matchbox 20." (review Listen.com, U.S.) * "While not quite the same feel, a good reference for the sound here is the hugely popular single a while back from the 4 Non Blondes. Particularly impressive: 'Here I Am, It Comes Again, The Way You Are, Better Days (The Rain).' This is definitely a band whose music is set to grab a wide ranging audience & they're only just starting off..." (album review hEARd magazine, Australia) * "Catchy happy tunes with the loose Eagle Eye Cherry approach. It's easy to see these guys are flagged for the bigtime." (NOW tv, Asia & web) * "Great band, great music!" (Alison Hulme, VJ and radio DJ, U.K.) * "Red to Violet est super!" (Patrick Martinez, radio DJ, France) *
