I had an LP of Red White and Blue(grass) Pickin' Up, one of my all-time favorite recordings. While looking for a CD of that record (I had converted the LP to CD about ten years ago, but wanted original studio CD for better sound), and I found the had recorded a second album! I scooped it up as quickly as I could.

As good as Pickin' Up, the addition of a string section in some of the pieces doesn't detract from the "bluegrass-y" nature of the album. I think my favorite piece is Whittlin', a full-bore, high-speed instrumental as good as anything they've done, and one of my favorite bluegrass pieces ever (but only 1:40 long.)

Many, many moons ago... Oh, Hell! I've used this opening so often it's got whiskers! Anyway, I first heard this on an eight-track (remember those?) and fell in love with the music on the spot. Well, as you probably know all too well, the tape finally curled up its toes and died, leaving me without some of my favorite bands. Then a thought struck me! Why not see if Amazon has it, and lo and behold, they did. Therefore, I bought it. (You were expecting maybe something else?)
Their music is not quite what you'd expect from a bluegrass group. In fact, I'm reminded of a tag-line from Monty Python: "Now for something completely different!" Trust me, it is! Red White and Bluegrass' style just grabs you and doesn't let go, nor do you want it to. Songs like "Linda Ann" and "Ginseng Sullivan" have a rather haunting quality to them, as does "Nine Years Waltz." If you are looking for straight blue-grass, this ain't it. Rather, this is blue-grass that's been changed into something really great. I love this album, and I'm sure you will, too.

I first saw the Red White and Bluegrass band at the Celler Door in Georgetown (Wash. D.C.) in 1974. They were not only great musicians but they were great showman. They had humor galore and a wonderful, warm stage presence.
The album I purchased from them (same as CD) had a song on it called "Its Only The Wind) which the CD does not have. I was hoping to get all of the same songs. However, I'm very pleased with my CD and play it often.

"Guaranteed - The Real Thing" Red White & Bluegrass: Guaranteed is not your traditional bluegrass album and Red, White & Blue (Grass) is not your traditional bluegrass band. Part of the progressive bluegrass movement of the seventies, this music was originally released as a 1973 vinyl album release by Atlanta based Ginn Music Group. While its possible Earl Scruggs may have listened to Crosby, Stills & Nash's version of "Love The One your With" there can be little doubt Lester Flatt wouldn't have gone along with the idea.

Red, White & Blue (Grass) liked the song, cut the song and it's on this cd along with thirteen other songs. "Make Me A Pallet" was the only song on this album to chart in Billboard. there's also a good version of "Duelin' Banjos" but neither of these songs are the reason I bought this cd.

I heard the album in the seventies and two songs stayed in my mind through all these years. I bought the cd for "Linda Ann" and "Nine Years Waltz". Both songs are haunting and will stay with you long after you hear them. "Linda Ann" is about a man drawn to a woman destined to destroy him. It's his plantive call for her to release him and let him go. "Nine Years Waltz" is a beautiful interaction of guitar, mandolin and symphony violins. No kidding, it works!

Many of the original songs were both written, and performed, by well known acoustic musician Norman Blake. As good a musician as he is, this cd showcases his strong songwriting skills.
