RED WIDOW: The Journey -- Travel Between Two Worlds With Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg, From The Writers' Room In Los Angeles To The Production In Vancouver, And Experience The Dynamic Interplay Of Writer, Character And Cast In This Taut, Emotional Series

Editorial Reviews

From the screenwriter of the TWILIGHT series comes a compelling new drama about the lengths one mother will go to protect her family amidst a dangerous journey to discover the truth behind her husband's murder. Housewife Marta Walraven (Radha Mitchell) adores her husband, children and their idyllic Northern California life together. But beneath the suburban dream lies a dark and dangerous world, and when life presents unforeseen tragedy, the perfect facade comes crashing down. Now Marta must drop all illusions, embrace her new reality, and dig deep to discover reserves of courage, resilience and ingenuity she never knew she had. Relieve the suspense, danger and emotion of all eight episodes, complete with never-before-seen bonus features that will pull you deeper into her web in ABC's RED WIDOW: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant so far! April 13, 2013
Let me preface this by saying it seems lots of critics trash this show based solely on the fact that it's written by Melissa Rosenberg, who also happened to pen the screenplays for the Twilight franchise. Apparently that is grounds for the show's premise to be instantly labeled as as "contrived" and "misguided." Perhaps the show is too female-centric to score many points with the male majority critics, but I find the concept appealing and very watchable.

Marta Walraven (nee Petrov)'s life is turned upside down by her husband's violent death, the consequences of his shady business partnership with her brother, Irwin, and their longtime friend, Mike. She inherits the fallout in the form of a large (and temporarily missing) shipment of stolen cocaine and a Romanian mob boss named Schiller seeking compensation for his stolen shipment in the form of her unwilling employment as his import/export handler for smuggled drugs and guns. Thus she is dragged back into her family's Bratva (Russian mob) lifestyle that she had tried so hard to distance herself and her children from, and in the midst of this, has to contend with her own grief and that of her three children; some very persistent feds sniffing at her door; family tension between brother Irwin, the coke thief, and her father Andrei Petrov, Russian mob patriarch; and the constant scheming between her coke fiend business partner, Mike, and Irwin who want to get their hands on the stolen (and belatedly recovered) cocaine to snort and/or sell it.

If that's not good drama, I'm not sure what is.

Is it "Breaking Bad" or "Weeds" or "The Sopranos"...? No, but I didn't expect it to be. This is network television, not cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Widow Season 1 May 22, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
Great show! Can't say enough good things about it. Never having watched it before, I caught the finale on TV and had to go back to watch the series in its entirety, even after I knew how it ended. It's a nice balance of suspense, romance, drama, and action without being predictable. The script is well written and doesn't insult the intelligence. The story revolves around a woman who is drawn into the criminal world through the actions of her family as she struggles to find a way to cut her ties to it while keeping her family safe. I enjoyed all the subplots and the characters were well developed. If you like Revenge, you will like this show, which in my opinion completely surpasses that soap opera melodrama. Unfortunately, I understand ABC canceled the series, but even so, the show wraps up nicely by the 8th episode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment! April 6, 2013
Happy to see broadcast TV coming out with solid competition to those horrific reality shows. Red Widow is a great ride, well-acted with a nice twist -- Russian mob instead of the same old Mafia tale! And the chemistry between Marta and Schiller is palpable!! So I'm sure ABC will cancel (programming decisions make zero sense these days) and we'll just have this first season to view over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Widow Season 1. March 20, 2013

Really like this show. It's about a woman who takes over for her deceased husband, who was killed. The husband owed the "wrong" people and now these people have enlisted the wife to assume his role. It turns out she is better at it, than he was. Strong group of actors on the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Series June 28, 2013
By JoB
Anson Mount is a good actor, very good. It surprised me he didn't last longer in the series but I understood he had his commitments with the series "Hell on Wheels". Still, after the pilot the showed kinda died on me for a few episodes but then it picked up thanks in large part to Radha Mitchell's performance.

She is a underrated actress, very good & talented. The show was hers to control and steer and she did. It was intriguing throughout even though it was short and later cancelled. Red Widow did not have life to carry out for another season should have deserved a second.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not what you expect. June 24, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
It started off very slow, building the characters and the plot. After the 1st episode you get to see how tragedy and it's aftermath can change not just one person but everyone it touches. All the while your left with the mystery of who killed her husband and how is she to protect herself and her children from the same fate. If you love True blood don't bother watching this. Their is no full frontal nudity and over the top drama queens. It's well acted with a good plot arc. It covers so much in just the 8 episodes. It's a drama, a murder mystery, and the start of a romance. The only down side is it leaves you wanting more, like a second season and possibly a third, because it only gets better.

It's a little CSI, a little Law and Order with a little God Father mixed in! I really liked it and I'm not normally into Mafia type movies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! June 14, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
I love this show. it has an amazing cast, great story line and great theme. The shows is real and believable and takes on a great point of view. I am very upset that the network didn't give this show a chance and cancelled it. I don't watch much of ABC anymore because they cancelled to many shows only after 1 season. I still watch this show even though it's only 8 episodes.
