I expect these will last a very, very long time, even though he's wearing them daily.

I have worn these boots for three days. I bought these boots to replace a pair of Doc's that I was able to destroy in 6 months of wear. I wear boots to work six days per week and spend the entire time standing on hard, slippery surfaces in a kitchen environment. The soles of my retired Doc's were worn smooth and had split wide-open, so I am hoping that Red Wing boots will outlast the sadly departed pair.

My first three days have been torture. The boots are challenging me to break them in. My ankles are rubbed raw at the collar of the boot and my smallest toe is killing me. As far as support and comfort, the overall sense I have is that they may one day be very comfortable to wear and may possibly provide great support. As of the end of the third day, I view them as adversaries.

Gimme a week and another bottle of advil to really know if I will like them enough to justify the cost.

    UPDATE:
So, I wore these boots for a day of yard work. I doubled up on socks and SOAKED my feet under the outdoor faucet. With soaked boots, I walked them dry and whadda ya know, they are now comfortable. Did this drill one more time the following week and they now fit like a glove and are remarkably comfortable boots.

    Update Two:
These boots now reside in the trunk of my car. I wore the second pair of soles off these boots (90 bucks a pop for new soles) a few months back. So the sole tally is 2 sets in total. Great boots, but hard to justify resoling boots every six months for the price of the boots ( not to mention the cost and wait time of it all). Dig the Redwing support and comfort, but probably will just wear these as a part of a two-pair rotation.

Break-in period was about 12 wears. They were rather stiff and rubbed quite a bit- especially during the first few wears. Hurt like heck, but in the end, totally worth it. Essentially, this happens with every new pair of boots I buy. I plan on having these boots for the long haul. My last pair of 875's lasted about 5 years! I'd still be wearing them today, but I left them at a camp site by mistake! Also- don't pay full price for these... check back daily, as their price fluctuates quite a bit! Snagged mine when they were 25% off!

Excellent boots. I read previous reviews that said the boots run large. This is true. My feet measure 10 1/2, I bought a size 10 and there is still a half inch of space in toebox. That's nothing a good insert won't care because these boots don't come with any. The leather is supple and somewhat oily which is good but they still feel like they need to be broken in a little bit. The biggest benefit to me personally is that I'm able to walk through the metal detector at work without these things setting it off. My only concern is that the boots I received did not come with a Redwing logo on the side of the boot as shown in the picture. Other than that, if they are knockoffs they did a very convincing job making me believe that they are red wings.

Got my first pair of the 875s, read alot of reviews online in order to ensure getting a pair that would fit on the first try etc.

This is my second week of wearing them and I have had no problems what so ever in terms of breaking them in.

here is what I did in acquiring mine:

    - I usually wear a 12, or 12.5. My Red Wing 875s are a 11.5. Anything less than 12 is generally unheard of for me, but after reading other reviews I went 0.5 size down, which worked out nicely!

    - Rubbed boots with boot oil on the first day. The color turned a little darker, so if you dont want darker boots for a while, don't use boot oil, however, the boot oil ensures the lasting of the boot.

    - Bought a pair of Red Wing wool socks that I wore with the boots every day for the first week, washing them every night in the washing machine, and then hang drying them. I have yet to resort to the water trick, as I haven't had any problems. The wool socks do make for a warm environment in the shoe, and my guess is this heat might help the leather softening process. However the wool socks does not make it unbearable.

None the less, I love the boots, I wear them on my motorcycle (great ankle support and isolation), I wear them with business casual gear, with jeans, and will wear them in the snow. Again, if you don't mind the darker coloration from the boot oil, you can wear these boots all year long, and simply apply the oil when needed. When the sole is ready to be replaced, you can go to a local Red Wing store and they send it in and replace the sole and refurbish the rest of the shoe for $60.00!

I have always had a good experience with Red Wing. However, these shoes do not have a leather finger loop on the back to assist in pulling on the shoe. I miss that. It should be standard. I will probably have my shoe repair guy add it.
