I discovered this band at this year's Folk Alliance Conference and wanted to hear more so I checked out their new CD "Red Wing". They are as good on "record" as they are performing live. This album shows both their musical talents (with guitarist/vocalist Trent Wagler. who wrote the majority of the songs here, singing with somewhat raspy voice) and the other three members filling in on mandolin, fiddle and bass. The traditional songs (such as the gospel closer "Working on a Building") mix with the new tunes ("Hymn for the Unsung" and two new instrumentals). The centerpiece is the title track, in which Wagler slowed down the old song about the "Indian maid", added new lyrics, and got Robin and Linda Williams to join the band on backing vocals.

I've played the album twice so far and am still discovering new pleasures. Listening to the CD in private allows these discoveries. But I'll still go to see them play live if they come my way.

I heard their song "Red Wing" on the Sunday morning radio show "Roots and Branches" on KGNU in Boulder, CO and immediately went looking for the album. It struck me because I recently took up the mandolin and was learning the traditional version. I found their treatment of it to be beautiful and inspiring. I have been listening to the CD now in my truck and I love it. There are a couple of songs I want to learn to play so I can share them. I hope to see them come to Denver to perform. I am looking forward to hearing much more of them.

Discover the Steel Wheels and you are in for a great experience. We have all their cd's. They are fabulous in concert. We are lucky to live in Virginia, Harrisonburg is where they all met. They held a three day festival there this summer 2013 and it was great. They travel a lot so FIND them somewhere in your area and do not miss!

My wife and I saw this group friday,April 27,2012 at Merlefest (Americana Stage)and we, and the rest of the audience it seemed, were astounded by their performance which consisted primarily of the songs on this album. The vocals, the lyrics and the musicianship are all exceptional and together place this group in rare company. These songs have the purity of a headwaters cascade, the promise of a breeze parting a Blue Ridge mist and the soul of a long empty country church.
