Nobody writes better hockey stories than Brian McFarlane. Nobody. Each one of Brian's books of The Original Six,(The Habs, The Leafs, The Bruins, The Rangers, The Blackhawks, and The Red Wings), tells us what it was like during The Original Six era, and then continues with their histories into the more modern era of the NHL. Brian threads each titled chapter with a series of catchy titled stories that have significant historical moments filled with colorful characters from owners to players and everything in between, usually proving that fact is always stranger than fiction. If you're a true fan of professional hockey and want to know more of how it all began, then you'll be thrilled with every facet of Brian's historical, and often hysterical storytelling of the world's fastest sport on ice. This review is from: The Red Wings (Brian McFarlane's Original Six) (Paperback)
I just reread this one last month and enjoyed it. I dug it out due to feeling a little sentimental after the Stanley Cup victory. I was in the mood for nostalgia and it delivered. McFarlane has written a concise, easily digestible history of the world's greatest hockey team (in my highly partisan view). It should appeal to every Red Wings fans and perhaps other fans as well if they appreciate the Original Six. The narrative ends with the 1998 Cup Victory, but luckily, thanks to Mr. Babcock, Mr. Zetterberg and their crew, the author will have excellent reason to update it. Thank God!
