Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A new publisher, a new title (this book was reviewed as Marauders in PW on Mar. 3, 1997, but was never issued) and an alleged rewrite are among the alterations in Green's latest sports-based suspense title. And, while the action still clips along at a sprightly pace, Green fails to improve the by-the-numbers resolution that originally plagued this story about a lethal NFL linebacker who goes on a killing spree. Florida Marauders star Luther Zorn becomes a prospective client for attorney Madison McCall (first introduced in Green's Outlaws) when McCall's boss forces her into the role of sports agent. But Zorn goes from starter to suspect when team owner Evan Chase is killed in a suspicious swimming accident, and McCall quickly finds herself defending a client who faces a pileup of damning evidence, including his affair with Chase's wife, a parking ticket that places him at the scene of the crime and some incriminating scuba gear that the police discover at his girlfriend's house. McCall calls on her partner to investigate the case, and he digs up several clues hinting at a conspiracy involving moneyed interests and a corrupt cop. An attempt to arrest Zorn leads to an extended chase after the linebacker kidnaps McCall and holds her hostage, with the body count mounting as Zorn races toward a confrontation with a pivotal figure from his past. Green's strength is his ability to write action scenes that effectively present the intricacies of pro football, and McCall delivers another winning performance despite a rather generic supporting cast. But the cardboard bogeyman who surfaces in the climax remains just as ludicrous this time around as Green fumbles away his second chance to fix a formulaic ending.

From Library Journal

Once again, ex-Atlanta Falcon Green (Marauders, LJ 4/1/97) tells a compelling story about football, greed, and violent men. Linebacker Luther Zorn is a dangerous man, always on the edge of rage. When his team's owner, with whose wife he has been having an affair, is murdered, he's a natural suspect. But some of the evidence is clearly planted, and his reluctant lawyer, Madison McCall, though not entirely convinced of his innocence, investigates, in turn becoming a target for a crazed killer. The characters are well drawn: Luther, lured into a trap and striking out, and Madison, who can't take any case without doing it right, as obsessed with winning as Luther. This is an exciting story, well told, violent, and true to the game it centers around. Public libraries will want it.

More About the Author

Tim is the NY TIMES BESTSELLING author of fourteen highly successful suspense novels, including soon-to-be-released FALSE CONVICTIONS and national bestseller ABOVE THE LAW, as well the non-fiction New York Times Bestseller, THE DARK SIDE OF THE GAME which was featured on CBS's 60 Minutes. His last five novels have all been national bestsellers hitting the charts between #22 and #30 on the NY Times Bestseller list. While his first five novels used professional football as their backdrop, his most recent works have drawn more on his experiences as a lawyer exploring the themes of ambition and revenge.

Tim is also the author of a memoir entitled A MAN AND HIS MOTHER: AN ADOPTED SON'S SEARCH which was featured in PEOPLE magazine, Entertainment Tonight, and ABC's Prime Time.
His writing career began at Syracuse University where he was a Rossman Scholar for Humanities, a Syracuse Scholar, an NCAA Top Six Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, and co-valedictorian of his class. While studying English Literature, Tim became acquainted with the renowned minimalist Raymond Carver, and had the opportunity to study under the award-winning writer and professor Tobias Wolff.

During his studies, Tim also played football for the Syracuse Orangemen with a career that included a consensus All-American honors as well as his recent induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. In 1986, he was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons where he was a star defensive end for eight years. During his NFL career, Green began his thirteen year career as a commentator for National Public Radio, wrote columns for USA Today, and received his law degree with honors at Syracuse University. Because of his accomplishments both Sports Illustrated and the Los Angeles Times have called Tim Green the "Renaissance Man" of sports. After his playing career, Tim spent eleven years as an NFL analyst for FOX Sports and recently hosted FOX's nationally syndicated news magazine, A Current Affair. His other broadcast experiences have included ABC Good Morning America's legal commentator, Court TV's Pros and Cons, host of FOX Sports Net's Emmy nominated show NFL TOTAL ACCESS, and Comedy Central's Battlebots. In 2007, Tim wrote FOOTBALL GENIUS, his first novel for young readers, and an instant NY Times Bestseller. The success and enjoyment of working with his own kids on the project resulted in FOOTBALL HERO, which was released in 2008. In both novels, Tim models the main characters after his own children, submerging them into a suspenseful world that blends adolescent life and sports with the visceral realm of the NFL. FOOTBALL HERO was selected as a Junior Library Guild choice and a GMA summer page turner for young adults. Most recently he released BASEBALL GREAT, another NY Times Bestseller, as well as FOOTBALL CHAMP. Tim's newest young reader novel, RIVALS, will be released in stores in March 2010.

3.0 out of 5 stars Green Scores with a Formulaic Mystery Novel, April 1, 1999
This review is from: The Red Zone (Hardcover)
I picked up this book prior to a cross-country flight. I couldn't put it down and finished it in the hotel, the same day. While neither the plot nor the characters are believable (one wonders where Green comes up with the names), the book is entertaining, if nothing else. He keeps you guessing, but his over-reliance on foreshadowing can get annoying, as can his often unorthodox use of figurative language. I recommend it to anyone who wants an easy "Grisham-esque" read for pure fun, or to any die-hard football fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tim does it again, August 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Red Zone (Hardcover)
I've read every book Tim has written and this is the best. Once I started reading, I didn't put it down. He's running a close second to my favorite author, John Sanford.
