Book Description

It took more than a bullet wound to stop Holly Masters from completing her intelligence mission. Generals, patrols, and experienced scouts had been her sport, until she met Dr. Nicholas Clayton. Severely injured and now his patient, in order to complete her assignment, she must decide if she can kill the man who saved her life.

Nicholas has healed wounded men for both the Patriots and the Crown, but he never expected to find a wounded woman, dressed in a British military uniform, on the edge of his property.

Tucked into her coat sleeve, she holds many secrets that will change the course of the war. As an officer, Nicholas has a duty to prevent her from leaving his custody. As a doctor, he has the means to prevent her from revealing what she knows. Trained for every action, nothing has prepared him for what he knows he must do.

Editorial Reviews

"The descriptions, undercurrents, and foreshadowing in this story make it a page-turner, plus the humor sparkles."  -- Long and Short Reviews

"This was a great Christmas romance with an interesting story line. I was glued to the pages until the end." -- Deborah Mehl

"As a Christian I found absolutely nothing offensive in this book and would not hesitate to allow my teenage granddaughter to listen. It was a lovely, tender story that I would not hesitate to recommend to my elderly christian friends and older teenagers." -- Susan Horsnell

About the Author

As a youth, I loved reading Trixie Belden books. She was great--smart, witty, and surrounded by good-looking guys. What's not to like? While in my teens, I discovered the answers to that question when I heard someone mention a romance novel she had read. Her shallow breathing and flushed face was enough to pique my interest. A trip to the bookstore was in order. I read with wide-eyed amazement. Trixie never spoke of such occurrences!

Other than the obvious, I found myself trying to appreciate what my friend had enjoyed about this book. Yeah, there was the hot guy and beautiful woman, but the book as a whole frustrated me. Why did it take 380 pages for the couple to admit they loved each other? To me, this is where the story began. Much to my sadness, I found this to be the writing norm.

I was determined to find an author who felt as I did. This is how I discovered Kathleen Woodiwiss. Yes! Someone who could tell a story with the two main characters committed to each other before the final pages. Needless to say, she became a favorite soon followed by Diana Gabaldon.

I hope to follow in both of these ladies' examples and combine history and romance throughout the entire story.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful Revolutionary War historical July 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this novella around Christmas, and loved it. In her usual style, and great descriptive writing, Carol Spradling weaves mystery and suspense into this historical set during the revolutionary war. A strong-willed heroine on a mission, together with a heart-of-gold hero, they both have a job to do and a decision to make in whom they can trust (and should they trust each other?) in this time of war. Surrounded by danger, trying to figure out who the bad guy is (as a reader, as well as from the characters' point of view) make this another page turner in the author's list of works. Rich in history, this is a sweet romantic read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves romances set in the revolutionary war period. Whether soaking up the sun at the beach, or curled up on the couch with a blanket on a winter's eve, the author will have you turning the pages until the very end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning! November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has a scene that makes it totally inappropriate to classify it under religious romance. I look for books in this category so I don't have to worry about that type of scene.... And now i have to worry about my teenage daughter reading it. I am not happy!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Doctor and the Spy Who Loved Him December 7, 2012
By Shirl
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a good short story. It was well written and easy to read. It was not a hot and heavy love story, but a growing kind of romance full of suspense and trust.
I don't usually read about times of war, but I did enjoy this book. It was about the warm hearted doctor and the woman who was a spy and the trust she developed for him. Not the war itself.Good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rapid fire, fun read! December 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When you read a novella, you expect the story to develop quickly. We are not disappointed when we enter the dangerous and deceptive world of Holly Masters, a feisty "bad-girl" who can definitely hold her own in pre-colonial America against the British soldiers. When she meets the dashing eligible bachelor, Dr. Nicholas Clayton, a bond between them rapidly develops. The author's creativity and literary license kept me guessing as I enjoyed every chapter. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Spradling!

Carol lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and loves every minute of it. The scenery and hikes are spectacular. She has an idea for a ghost story.
