5.0 out of 5 stars A Dance Classic, January 23, 2000

This review is from: Redd Hot (Audio CD)
American Sharon Redd was the diva of choice for serious UK clubbers in the early 80s. Redd, at one time a member of Bette Midler's "Harlettes", managed to obtain British chart success long before Midler did. This album, one of three she recorded for the Prelude label, contains the majority of her UK hit singles. The production on this album is stunning as is Redd's deep, rich voice. The biggest hit, "Never Give You Up" is a dancefloor monster, a once heard/never forgotten experience. Redd was equally adept at ballads, as "Takin' A Chance On Love" will demonstrate. Sadly, Redd died in 1992, and yet again, a great voice was silenced. This CD is a must for those into great dance music, and great voices.

I was collecting some old dance music when i can across this. My local radio station used to play "Beat The Street". I always loved that song. Wow! I never knew how good the LP was. It's great. I noticed it went all the way to number one in the billboard club chart. I strongly recomend it.

...in hindsight, this forgotten record, released on a long-defunct New York disco label, was one of the better R&B albums of the early 80's, if not one of the very best.

Go ahead - compare it to "Midnight Love," "The Songstress," etc...Sharon's rich, excitable contralto is in the winner's circle, and the Eric Matthew/Darryl Payne production rode the cutting edge of New York funk/dance of the day.

Thus, the album's three hits: "Beat The Street," "Never Give You Up," and "In The Name of Love" clicked with the emergent hip-hop, latino and white gay dancefloor crowds, respectively, of the day. And the album's ballads are pretty good, too!
