Full-title: The Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion; or, A Faithful history of the remarkable occurrences in the Captivity and Deliverance of Mr. John Williams, Minister of the Gospel in Deerfield, who in the Desolation which befell that Plantation by an incursion of the French and Indians, was by them carried away, with his family and his neighborhood, into Canada, Drawn up by Himself; to which is added, A Biographical Memoir of the Reverend Author, with An Appendix and Notes, by Stephen W. Williams, A. M., M. D.

The personal narrative of the Reverend John Williams (1664-1729), first Puritan minister of the frontier out-post of Deerfield, Massachusetts, is one of the more well-known of the numerous 'captivity narratives' published during the Colonial period in US History. The narrative of his captivity, which lasted from February, 1704 through November, 1706, was originally published in 1707, and underwent numerous editions during the next nine decades before going out of print.

Appended materials include: Names of those who were slain at the Taking of the Town. - Names of the Captives who were taken at the destruction of the Town of Deerfield, February 29th, 1703-04. - List of the Soldiers and the Descendants of such as are deceased that were in the Fight, called the Fall Fight, above Deerfield, who are entitled to the Township granted by the General Court. - Extracts from the Journal of Rev. Stephen Williams. - Extracts from Sermons. - Extracts from Letters. - A brief history of 'The Barrs Fight,' the last incursion of the Indians against the Town of Deerfield, August, 1746.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horribly written account of a true story by a poor writer., February 27, 2000

This review is from: Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion: Or, a Faithful History of Remarkable Occurrences in the Captivity and Deliverance of Mr. John Williams (Hardcover)
This book is written as though it was the 'Old Testament'. In fact it contains more 'scripture than details of the happenings.
