Carlene Davis' third Christian album finds her experimenting a bit yet retaining the warm, Caribbean gospel sound for which she is loved. "Lord I Lift Your Name On High" is a surprisingly refreshing take on an often covered song. Here, Carlene duets with the with Junior Tucker whose high-ranging voice compliments hers perfectly with accompaniment from a great horn section and backing vocals. The title track is a testimonial cut that is more reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper, both in musical style and in Carlene's voice- very nice! "Lord I Give You My Heart" is a standout track which coneys the passionate intimacy that Carlene hungers and thirst for in her relationship with God. This song, which clocks at about 6 1/2 wonderful minutes, is actually from the popular Hillsongs of Australia collection. I find a great deal of comfort and reassurance by the message and Carlene's rendering of the song. A big tune in Jamaica was (and still is) "This Island Needs Jesus" where the lyrics reflect that drinking, carousing and just basking in the sun are not what the isalnd should be all about. In a pleasant way, Carlene tells that "...it's about more than just seashore and sand...". The song has a Cuban-flavored reggae beat that is very infectious. "It Must Be Love" shows Carlene's experimental side by adding some nice violin sounds to a reggae gospel beat with guest vocalist Papa San adding his trademark chatting style to the track. Overall, the album's a fine mix of reggae riddims and contemporary/traditional gospel sounds. For roots reggae fans, it may come across as rather polished. I'd like to see Carlene make an album that has that real roots style with acoustic drums, horns, guitar etc, produced with the old school feel. However, don't pass up this collection of beautiful songs that are filled with praise, testimony and encouragement. I think all reggae fans would enjoy at least some of the songs and this would also be a great album for those a little apprehensive about getting into the reggae sound. My fiancee loved this disc so much that she wouldn't give my copy back and I had to order another one!
