Book Description

Ernest Tuveson here shows that the idea of the redemptive mission which has motivated so much of the United States foreign policy is as old as the Republic itself. He traces the development of this element of the American heritage from its beginning as a literal interpretation of biblical prophecies. Pointing to the application of the millenarian ideal to successive stages of American history, notably apocalyptic events like the Civil War, Tuveson illustrates its pervasive cultural influences with examples from the writings of Jonathan Edwards, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Timothy Dwight, and Julia Ward Howe, among others.

This review is from: Redeemer Nation: The Idea of America's Millennial Role (Midway Reprint Series) (Paperback)
This is delightful work of the rise of post-millenialism within the growth of America, with its ties to puritanism in Britain and then developed here in the colonies by the likes of Mather and Edwards, et al.

Solid writing style pervades this tracement of the concept of America fulfilling end times prophecy concerning a country which would provide the earthly reign of Christ's people and/or beliefs.

Classic work which provides much for the student of American Christianity or end times history among this nation.

This review is from: Redeemer Nation: The Idea of America's Millennial Role (Midway Reprint Series) (Paperback)
Seminal historic study of the apocalyptic world-view at the root of American Protestantism's chiliastic or millenarian "sense of mission" as a Biblical-ordained "Redeemer Nation."
