A novel centered in what is recognizably Twin Falls, Idaho. Three just mustered out WWI soldiers face those who stayed home and got rich. The story hinges on the Choices the several returning war veterans make, some good, some bad.. One of the men, Sgt. Carroll Merling, plans an escape from his parents and dominating and rich oldest brother, Levall, by jumping a freighter to Hollywood. Before Carroll can leave town, he attends a celebration for the returned veterans where his beloved 16 year old sister has been chosen to sing "The Star Spangled Banner." At the Celebration, he meets and falls in love with Esta Gillian, a school teacher and the woman his brother Levall plans soon to marry. Though Esta has promised to marry Levall, a growing attraction for Carroll unsettles her promise. She seeks advice from a gypsy fortune teller which ends in disaster but gives Esta the opportunity she needs to declare her interest in Carroll.
